The campground was not full during our mid-week stay and toilet facilities and grounds were exceptionally well maintained. Our grandkids and other children enjoyed scooters and bicycles around the campsite. The nearby Old Growth Trail is perfect for young children. We all enjoyed an afternoon visit to Iron Creek Falls, which is found south of the campground on Forest Road 25, just before the turn onto Forest Road 99. The waterfall is splendid, dropping maybe 100 ft into a small plunge pool.
My husband and I hiked nearby Tongue Mountain, which was an easy to moderate hike with excellent views of Rainier, Adams, and Mount St. Helens. We completed the 4 mile hike in 1.5 hours. The top is a narrow, rocky ridge that may not be suitable for children. We also enjoyed a 51-mile loop drive, starting at the campground, heading south on Forest Road 25, turning west on Forest Road 99, south on Forest Road 26 to the dead end at Windy Ridge (overlooking Mount St. Helens), and then north on Forest Road 26 to where it joins Forest Road 25 at Iron Creek Campground. This trip took us a little over 3 hours, stopping to enjoy the views of Mount St. Helens, Adams, and Rainier. The loop is an opportunity to see how the landscape around Mount St. Helens is recovering from the eruption in 1980. Warning: Forest Road 26 is paved but in terrible condition with many slumps. Forest Road 25 is only somewhat better.
