It was disappointing finding all the clear cutting going on in the campground. It was disconcerting that the Bartram trail has been eliminated in the campground because we always look forward to walking the trail with our dogs. If we had known we needed to make a reservation before we arrived it would have been easier too. We have never known our exact dates to be there and in years past we just went up to the office paid for our site and that was it. Now you have to make a reservation before you can drive in campground by phone it was a sixteen minute wait and impossible to get on the internet without WiFi!The campground hosts said they really didnt know what they were there for because they couldnt do anything! It looks to me like someone new took over and had to reinvent the wheel when this process had already been tried before and probably failed! Anyway it wasnt as pleasant as previous visits.

I stayed in loop A, the only area open year-round. Its sites are all located along the shore of the lovely lake and are placed in such a way that, despite the massive loss of trees from Hurricane Helene, there is privacy and a view of the water. This time of the year there aren't a lot of campers, and that generally means a peaceful environment. Kudos to the many park employees and local loggers who workedso diligently to restore this lovely camping area. Roger Marin Aiken, SC

The campground is beautiful and our favorite place to be. We stayed on site 2. The view is gorgeous and it’s in a quiet cove. The negative is the site holds water when it rains and becomes very muddy!

The campgrour was not very active this time of year which made for avery peaceful stay. Augusta, Ga. is not far away and we explored some local activities. It's a beautful area to enjoy being outdoors. The bathrooms were very clean but could use some attention.

Visited in camper van four times for total of one months stay in Jan/Feb 23. Only one loop open, but took many dog walks around closed loops. Large, private, waterfront sites with water and electric. Free laundry. Bathhouse was clean. Theres a paddle trail on the lake. Get info at visitor center by the dam.

Beautiful campground - lakeside spots for almost all campsites. Staff friendly and bathrooms/showers kept clean daily. Will stay there again.

The campsite's location on Strom Thurman Lake is lovely and well laid out for privacy. Under common weather conditions, my stay would have been the usual pleasant experience, though your attempt to save money by purchasing narrow toilet paper was ill-thought-out unless, of course, you enjoy the challenge of keeping your hands "spotless" when you wipe. Seriously? My main complaint lies in the lack of bathroom heating, which not only made the potential showering untenable, but later resulted in a major water pipe bursting and flooding the room and roadway. I realize that the unusually cold night and the following day were not the norms, however weather forecasters warned of the potential in time to take precautions. I also realize that money is sadly lacking for ACE campsite maintenance, but sometimes ignoring it in order to save money can come back to bite you. P.S. the entrance to Site 2 loop A has been partially washed out for quite some time and remains so.

Spacious sites with trees between each area. Amenities like beach, playground, picnic shelter were all in very good condition. The facility could use a fenced dog run; perhaps in the grassy area at the trailhead..Overall great experience.

We love the park and how it's laid out. What we don't like is the way you make reservations. There are only a few sites that accommodate our camper and it seems like a battle to get those sites reserved.

What makes this place so special is the solitude. Lake Thurmond (Clarks Lake) is a GEM with almost ZERO residential occupation along it's shores. Hiking and MTB trails are connected to the campground making an experience in the woods simple. Excellent for families and couples alike due to the generous campsite spacing. It's not Backcountry camping but it gets as close as you can for campers and "Glampers" alike.

Petersburg is quiet, wooded and spacious campground. Most campsites are separated by a generous distance between each site. The lake is nearly void of all development making the experience feel very remote and isolated. Located 25 min north of Augusta, Ga., access is easy. We go there for short trips just to rejuvenate and get back to nature with a hike through the Bartram Trail.

Overall, Great Camp Ground. Two issues- Firstly, our site was a MUD PIT. It could use a new load of gravel. Secondly- the ladies shower has no privacy curtain for the dressing area.

Petersburg is a great campground. Although close to home, its our #1 choice from more than 10 campgrounds in the local area around Clarks Hill/Thurmond Lake. Great and helpful campground hosts, newly paved roads throughout that are easily maneuverable in big rigs. Almost all the campsites are lakeside, very spacious, and uniquely situated in this campground to be off the main campground roads. The bathroom/shower houses are clean and well maintained. Lots to do in the area, especially for day hikers on the local Bartram trail, and waters ports enthusiasts on the lake and well kept and contained beaches in the campsite. Boat ramp, 2 well kept dump stations, and other amenities. No store, but Pollards Corner grocery less than 10 minutes say has everything you need to resupply. If you find yourself bored, relax on the bench of their onsite pond and if your lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the resident alligator, I cant remember his name, but have seen him twice!

Your campsites are spacious and each one has a view. My husband and I have stayed at Petersburg campground several times and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Walking around the campground in the evening when things have quieted down is a very satisfying way to end the day.
