Always enjoy my stay here each year. I love hearing the National Anthem played in the distance at the military basr and like seeing the occasional Blue Angel fly over. I lile that is has the calmer bay side water to go to on one side and.waves on the other. The history of the fort there reminds pe to keep in prayer for out nation. Personnel are professional and on top of things.

This place is beautiful! Worth taking bicycles to cruise around and take in the scenery. A great walk along the beach or even a great quit place to relax at the beach.
But when camping or being outdoors at night, remember to bring bug spray. Also beware of the raccoons who prowl at night, they will take things.
All in all my family had a wonderful experience and we plan to come back one day.

I give 4/5 stars because there is an "Absolutely no dogs on beaches" ban. It is enforced everywhere on Pensacola (mainland and Santa Rosa island). We had two MAS with us who are used to daily off-leash exercise (under voice command, not running around like a herd of wild monkeys) but couldn't go anywhere. So even though we were within a 5 min walk to the beach, we couldn't go there. While the camping is dog friendly and there are a lot of campers with dogs, I was happy to go back home to let my dogs run free once again. Santa Rosa has two small dog beaches (thin strips of the beach where dogs are allowed), but it is packed unless you go at dusk/dawn/night. There is also a dog park somewhere in Pensacola mainland, but I don't go to dog parks because, in general, humans misbehave at dog parks. If you're happy with keeping your dog on a leash, then it shouldn't matter to you. Apart from MY dog issue, the beaches, and the nature, once you pass the entrance to the preserve (where the camping is located), are breathtaking, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet holiday. I went there during spring break, and apart from passing spring-breakers on the way, this camping is quiet, with hosts living on the grounds, so even if someone decided to be noisy, I'm sure he'd be quickly reprimanded. Facilities are cleaned daily and much better than at most campsites (actual plumbing vs. the usual smelly hole in the ground covered by a toilet seat), so I was pleasantly surprised. I wish the rest of Florida's coast looked like Fort Pickens.

Check-in after hours was easy with the gate code sent along with reservation. We had to drive back to the office the next day to get our pass because it was too far to walk. The Park Service volunteer hosts were so friendly and helpful. There was a nice bike path to the fort in one direction and out to the beach in the other direction. Water tasted a bit "mineral" but filling the van tanks was easy. There was boardwalk out to the beach, just opposite the B campground entrance that was a bit old and warped but worked just fine.

Had to book extra sites. Website said that 2 vehicles were allowed on campsite, but was told I had to pay for another campsite to park a second car.
