Staying at Ft Pickens was the most intense and negative camping experience I've ever had. The campground hosts roam the campground constantly looking for the smallest infractions to catch you on. At one point I pulled into my campsite to let an eager driver by before re parking more evenly in my site. My back tire was 1" off the concrete for less that 2 minutes. Despite seeing me get out of the way of another person, the camp host immediately informed me I can not park on the grass. Also, the check out time is very early, 11am and if you are in your camp site at 11:02am they will ask you to leave and shame you for being late, even if you are in the process of packing up your camp. It is true that I violated two rules, but the level of surveillance and oversight is pretty overboard. These camp hosts have a reputation in the campground for being difficult and unfriendly. All the bathrooms were super dirty! There was garbage around in various areas. I wonder if they spent less time trying to catch people in minor infractions and more time taking care of the area things would be better. In addition Florida State allows people to book 2 weeks of camping at a time and they are told they only have to leave for 2 days then can camp for 2 more weeks and continue to repeat this process. The effect is that some people are living in this campground for long periods of time, blocking others from getting spots. If a spot becomes available, its often for only one night. I was there for 4 nights and moved to a different campsite every night. This is not only a pain, but for each booking Florida state charges you a $6.70 booking fee. This fee is very high. It may be more reasonable if you were able to book 2 weeks of camping and pay the fee once, but if you cant get a spot due to the long term "residents" you pay the fee every time. I spent $26.80 for the four nights, and that's just the booking fee, not the camping fee or the daily ($7) utility charge.

We loved this park. Would go here over most other parks in the system.

Fort Pickens is a great place to camp. Nice hiking trails on island.
Be prepared to evacuate if a tropical storm or stronger is in the Golf.

Great beaches, campsites and staff. However, the showers are terrible. They are clean but they have no seat, shower cirtans or hooks to hang clothes, towels, etc

Always the “go to” location on the gulf coast. Always a wonderful experience
