Love the island! Wish it was easier to get a reservation on the weekends

A really simple thing to bring is a doormat. It is impossible to not track in sand and a doormat would be extremely helpful

Cabins were better than expected. Overall cabins were clean. Area for the generator was nice. Our group all said we would definitely go back.

We (family of four, two kids ...4 and 6...) recently enjoyed a two-night stay at the Great Island Cabins during the opening weekend of spring. Luckily, the lack of bugs made for a pleasant experience, despite the chilly weather. We were blessed with sunshine throughout, with only brief showers one evening. The cabins exceeded our expectations, impressing even my "non-camping" wife. The comfortable mattresses ensured a good night's sleep, although some window coverings would have been appreciated for a darker atmosphere in the mornings. Nonetheless, a bit of improvisation with duct tape and trash bags did the trick. Bring an extra table so you have sufficient space to prep or clean up for meals. All amenities, including toilets, showers, stove, and hot water, were in excellent condition. However, be sure to bring a generator to power the cabin, whether it's a large electric battery or gas-powered. The generator dog house conveniently provides wiring for 110 power. Ice and gasoline are available for purchase on-site, and the drive to the lighthouse was nothing short of amazing. We were somewhat unprepared for the energy consumption of driving in the sand, especially in our electric car, which used three to four times more energy than usual. Special thanks to Carlos for lending us a generator to recharge and make it back to the mainland and continue our exploration of the outer banks. For future visits, we plan to bring our own gas generator, as driving on the beach was an absolute blast and something we don't want to skimp out on. Additionally, the experience has sparked an interest in fishing that we're eager to explore further. It would be beneficial for locals or the ferry service to consider offering generator rentals for visitors like us who prefer not to haul one on a lengthy road trip. Overall, our stay was fantastic, and we look forward to returning. Places like this won't be around for forever - enjoy it while you still can.

The ocean was beautiful and the fishing was great. Its about an hour drive down the beach to the point but it is well worth it. Cabins are very primitive. If you dont bring a generator you should bring some lanterns or you will be sitting in the dark at night. You must bring everything you need. Everything! I will come again but I will be better prepared next time. Overall, it was a great experience.

Bring duct tape to seal screens that are damaged. Also pack a fly swatter if staying in a cabin.
