Despite the federal gov't shutdown, staff were still present and very helpful for check in and answering questions, with a positive attitude.Cabins are functional, but very rustic.

Cabin 23 was good overall. There were a few ants around and also a mouse. But otherwise it was okay. The beds slept well.

I have been here many times and this trip was one of my best. Perfect weather and even caught a few fish. Ate especially good food. Got a little rest. What more than that can you ask for.?

Cabin 23 was adequate for our use. Only complaint was controlling the oven. No markings and a worn out knob made it hard to know temperature setting and when the oven was turned off. Mattresses we're better than expected; slept pretty comfortably.

Cabins are very basic, bring a mattress topper mattresses are hard but clean. Cabin was clean. Propane oven did not shut off unless you went outside to shut off valve. All in all the cabins were what they describe them as. Cape Lookout is worth going to explore. Bring a fly swatter. Bring a staple gun in case the screen needs to be attached.

Park staff was very friendly and answered all questions we had concerning our time on the island.
Already looking forward to seeing them again this October.

Definitely a bare bones cabin but still clean and very comfortable. Rangers were very friendly and helpful. Hum of generators is the only drawback to the experience. Would definitely go back though

South Core Banks is a rugged, windswept, and austere landscape. The Great Island Cabins are plain without electricity, linens, or any kitchen supplies, but they do have good hot water, flush toilet, and working stove. We don't use a generator--we want to hear the ocean and the birds. The only thing you can buy on the island is bait and ice. Bring everything you need including bug spray and sunscreen. If you like an isolated, rustic place, you will be happy. I have come here many times over many years, though it takes a lot of prep, and in recent years, it's even more trouble because I'm now 12 hours away. Worth it, but I like this undeveloped island.

Amazing seems to be the common description of this place and rightly so. It truly is an amazing and special place. We stayed the last few days of March and first days of April. The weather was glorious and the beaches were ridiculously deserted. We have never surf fished but got a crash course from a great guy named David who owns the Davis Shore Bed and Breakfast. We stayed there one night and it is a great place to stay.

We caught a lot of fish and searched tide pools at low tide and found a ton of shells and sea creatures.

We stayed in cabin 23 and it was great although it was in need of minor repairs. The towel rack fell off and the sink drain became disconnected. I was able to fix both. The cabins allow for electrical hookup which we didn't have and didn't miss. However, our weather was in the 60's and 70's. I am guessing that with no trees to shade any of the cabins, they will be murderously hot in the summer so a generator and portable air conditioner would be great.

We were given a key with the disclaimer that it may not work. It didn't but no worries we kept our valuables in our car. The rangers and volunteers and Ferry service were all very nice and helpful.

Pro fishing tip for those who haven't surf fished. Lookup "drop rig" and rig your pole that way. You can buy a surf rod, sand spike and enough tackle and bait to fish for about $60. It is a ton of fun and well worth it. 30 lb test mono works well.

The reservations process is stressful when planning an annual trip for a group due to the numbers of people who want to make reservations in October and November.

Cabins are basic and affordable, hot & cold running water and working range; any more would take away from the back-to-nature element of visiting Core Islands. On first trip out, I informed my sons that cell phones would not work on the island, on the second trip they discovered that service was available but didn't spend any real time on devices. This is a great place to go to be human, something you cannot buy.
