what a wonderful location for a campground. Beautiful surroundings and only feet from Long Beach walks, sunrises and sunsets.

Very clean facilities, and a great location. Privacy lacking, but it is a beach after all so there is no real opportunity for vegetation to screen the view.

No trees and a little tight between campsites, beach is about a 100m walk. Not the best beach campsite, but overall decent.

We stayed at site 11-A. It was on the ocean side of the park. It was a 5 min walk up the dunes to the beach. The showers/bathrooms were across the street about 2 min walk. I was expecting a cold shower, but the water was warm! Bring bug spray, they came out at sunset and in the early morning. And make sure you wear shoes at the site. There are sand spurs. We stayed end of May. Would 10/10 go back!

Campsite #11: Van camper, April 29, 2024. This is a primitive site! Very windy too - you are on the Outer Banks after all. Choose not to pitch tent due to wind and blowing sand. There were several hardy campers in tents, although expect they had much sand in their bedding. Camp stove on picnic table would be difficult to keep lit and blowing sand most likely to find its way into your cooking. Restrooms were nice (running water) and clean. Showers were more primitive; separate from the restroom bldg, with 3/4 doors (feet and head visible to outside) and an overhead center "shower" head with pull lever to activate. I found it difficult to not wet my clean clothes and towel (draped over the door) with this overhead shower. This "shower" is most likely suited to rinse off sand and salt while wearing your swim suit.

This location is everything the outer banks has to offer, its right in the middle of the dunes and a minute walk from the beach. It is also very close (15 min drive) to an awesome state park and town with cute coffee shops. The showers were free and super warm which was much appreciated. The bathrooms were also very clean! The sites are well maintained and the staff super organized. The dunes protected our tent from the wind coming off the ocean but it was still consistently windy for the three night stay. The burrs and the sand were annoying but that was part of the terrain and you can't really change that. It was a little sad that we also could not have wood fires but the charcoal stand provided was plenty big for cooking. The sites were very very close together and the one way drive though the sites was very close to the sites so there was zero privacy. It is nice to talk to people around and see the whole campsite but it is just a little too open. Also the campground is right on the highway so you can occasionally hear cars going by. It wasn't too busy but definitely not a remote feeling. Overall the campsite was a great way to experience the outer banks and be close to the ocean and the sunrises/sunsets were incredible.

The bugs were pretty bad at the campsite - sand fleas and flies. This made it extremely difficult to hang out outside at night or even during the day. Basically the camp was only good for sleeping.

Unfortunately Hurricane Ida was shooting high winds to OBX so not so pleasant.

Sandspurs were horrendous, which made it very unpleasant. Beach was heavily trafficked with fishermen, also a damper.

Thankful they decided to open the park during the winter time. I hope they continue this trend in the future because the area was very quiet in the off season. Our time here was excellent and look forward to coming back! Our campground volunteers Joe and Donna were very helpful!
