Proximity to Roanoke Island and Nags Head is excellent. There's a nice trail to the beach. There is pedestrian access from the campground to the fishing center across the road. Also, Pea Island Nature Reserve is just over the bridge. I recommend wearing shoes at all times, as the sand spurs are vicious and numerous.

Great location and facilities. However the Sand Spurs are insane. They stick to everything and will be everywhere.

Oregon Inlet campground was very well maintained, with exceedingly nice park rangers. The kayak ramp across the street from the campground was very convenient and kayaking in the area was really fun with an interesting coastline and islands near by to paddle to. Just a short drive south of Oregon Inlet is Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The hike along the wildlife refuge was beautiful, and unlike many of the beaches in the OBX, the beach at Pea Island did not allow vehicles. Since Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is no where near a town or beach houses, the beach was pristine and not crowded. With Oregon Inlet campground being only about a 10 minute or so drive from Nags Head, it was easy to get items we needed while camping. We will definitely be back :-)

I had a wonderful time camping at Oregon Inlet! The area was so serene and RIGHT next to the beach. I enjoyed watching the sunrise.

Recent changes in management of the booking system has led to some serious concerns regarding the fairness and impartiality of the way the Board of Tourism in North Carolina processes the bookings and deals with its tourists. We were traveling with a group of 12 people and I made a booking for the group site much in advance of our trip. The site got cancelled last minute and as there were no other campings available for our group, the only way we could proceed on our much anticipated trip was to book 2 separate spots for each night. This meant that we had to relocate the whole group every night to two different, not neighbouring, sites as those where the only ones left available. However, we were prepared to make this hustle, as we understood that the state had to take extra precautions in relation to Covid. So, while we struggled to keep our group happy while adapting to the challenging circumstances of moving everyone every night to different sites, it turned out that the group site was booked after all. What happened? Our reservation got cancelled, not for Covid reasons, but other people pulled in some connections with the Board of Tourism. Long story short, our site got cancelled to enable the new group to book it. The rangers couldn't make any amendments to our booking, as everything is supposed to be booked online as to ensure 'impartiality' and 'fairness' on a first come first serve base. While I wish the other group the best and hope they enjoyed their vacation, they basically 'stole' it from us. As a lawyer and a former diplomat, I am shocked to see this form of nepotism so close to home. Also, none of my fellow diplomat friends has seen anything like this before. It was a truly sad story. However, the incredible awesome rangers and volunteers at the site eased our pain a bit with their kindness and understanding. Thanks to them, we somewhat enjoyed our stay. So, please stop by and say hi to this awesome team of rangers, but don't try to make a booking here
