One of the best most beautiful campgrounds I have been. One star down because it would be nice to have a sink to wash the dishes and maybe a hot shower. I would totally see some kind of sun heated roof top shower system. But meanwhile its beautiful enough to endure freezing water ;)

Beautiful campsites in a tertiary dune field, some shade and wind protection if you choose carefully. Bathrooms were clean, cold water shower not too bad, but solar hot water heaters would be greatly appreciated. Biggest disappointment was that the entire beach in front of the campground is a driving beach and is overrun with trucks starting at approximately sunrise every morning. I had to drive to a no-car beach every day.

This is my favorite campground in Hatteras. Showers aren't heated, but that's not a problem in the summer when the water coming out of the showers is almost lukewarm and pretty refreshing, and this is coming from someone who gets cold easily. Bathrooms have always been in good condition every time I've been there. A lot of the sites have plenty of tree cover, so depending on the site you choose, it has more privacy than most of the other campgrounds in the area. Bring plenty of bug spray, you'll need it or you might get carried off by the island's aggressive giant mosquitoes. No open campfires at this campground, but there are built in charcoal grills at the sites. You can bring firewood and make a fire on the beach after you get a free beach fire permit, but unless you'll be driving a 4WD on the beach, it's quite a long walk from the campground to the beach if you're carrying a load of firewood. There's not a camp store, but there is a market/gas station/tackle shop at the road that you turn turn to get to the campground, so no need to panic if you forget to pack something, need to get ice, bait, etc. Nights offer some of the best stargazing you could ask for. The milky way is clearly visible and we saw plenty of shooting stars on this most recent trip.

What a beautiful campground! I was concerned about having to choose a site online, without seeing it first, but read some reviews and took note of sites others liked. My site (P48) was wonderful! Both the tent site and picnic table were tucked down in the woods under a canopy of trees. Quiet, gorgeous, private. Beautiful. I also recommend exploring in the maritime forest behind the site. However, I don't recommend this site for summer as there are boggy areas in the ravine behind the site and I imagine the bugs would be fierce (I had none.) Also, the site is in a hollow and could flood the floor of the tent if there was heavy rain. There was rain while I was there, but not bad enough to cause flooding. There are also low hanging branches - which are both scenic and perfect for hanging gear, etc. But be careful not to bump your head. This may sound like a lot of warnings, but the beauty, mystery and privacy of the site were wonderful and I'd go back in a heartbeat in cool weather.Even as far from the beach as I was, I could still hear the surf most nights, which of course was wonderful. Unfortunately on Friday night when there was no wind or sound of surf, I could also hear traffic on Rte 12. Also trucks are allowed to drive on the beach, which I don't enjoy at all... but the campground is so beautiful it was worth it.The campground is in great shape. Bathhouse well kept. One review I read said the bathhouse hasn't got a light, but it does. The light goes out in the morning when day comes up. The longer boardwalk path to the beach was also gorgeous. When I was there other campers were quiet and respectful of generator times, which I greatly appreciated. Convenience store had a nice little selection of wine. I got take out from Tavern on 12 which was great.Only real drawback about this campground for me is that kayaking is a big part of what I do and there weren't many areas to do that. Go see Pea Island Refuge.

Ive been here several times. Not all campsites are created equal unfortunately. Make sure you have leveling blocks. Its a super easy walk down the boardwalk to the beach. Showers are always cold, but there are always enough for the entire campground.
