This campground is a great choice if you cant secure a spot at more popular spots and have an RV. Its just alright if youre tent camping. Its about 30 minutes from Custer state park, an hour from Spearfish canyon and an hour from Wind cave and the views on the drive are unbeatable. The site I stayed at (001) is alright, a good amount of shade but its literally 15 feet from the entrance to the campground. For me, I wish I couldve had more privacy and not hear every bit of traffic entering and leaving. It was a short distance from the toilet which was nice. That being said, the staff was amazing and extremely helpful with recommendations and just friendly and pleasant people. While its beautiful and peaceful (sometimes, theres construction I heard throughout the nights during my stay), its as primitive camping as it can get without being backcountry camping. The bathrooms are pit toilets and a spigot for drinking water is the only amenities you have. Google will tell you theres showers on site but there isnt and you cant use the spigot for dishes or anything. Youre told a campground 5 minutes away has WiFi and a shower but when I went, it was run down and I just left. I guess if youre experienced with this and dont mind, its not a big deal. However my whole trip was centered around 5+ miles of hiking daily and not being able to shower wasnt the best. Its not a horrible place for tent camping but its really ideal for RVers and while Im glad I got to experience it, I wouldnt stay again.

The park is gorgeous. The sites are first rate. Access is tight, but thats fine given the reward of such a beautiful spot to stay.I did find the staff to be overly policing to the point of almost intimidation. As there was no services whatsoever, things like generators are required. If you got home late and ran the generator one minute past 10. There was a knock on the door. I think somebody came by our site every 15 to 20 minutes all evening to make sure that we were abiding by all rules and regulations. It felt more like incarceration than camping. As a couple caring for three young well behaved boys it seemed a little over the top. We had neighbours that were treated similarly.I would still come back to your camp site, however, I would look for a site far from your camp hosts as at 52 years old, I dont require babysitting.

This was our second stay and is still our favorite campsite! We had a family reunion and had a blast! Great spacious campsites that have some privacy. Beautiful, clean lake with gorgeous views. The camping staff was very friendly and helpful. Close to all the main attractions in the Black Hills. Highly recommend to anyone and we look forward to camping at Lake Sheridan many more times!
