A very nice small campground. We loved the secluded feeling staying in the park, even though we were only 20 minutes out from Montrose. There is minimal shade available at sites which made the hot afternoon tough, but there are many great trails to do that weave between the campgrounds the visitor center, and the canyon rim.

Too close together, otherwise great.

Clean and easy to get to campsites with easy access to main roads, visitor center and many hikes.

Nice standard national park campsite. On the primitive end. Limited access to anything. Only one water station per loop, pit toilets, and trash is a ways from any sites.

Black Canyon is an interesting National Park. I'm not sure it's worth it's own dedicated trip unless you plan on going to the bottom of the canyon (climbing and fishing are probably the two activities most worth while). The activities and trails at the rim on top are fairly sparse, especially with some COVID limitations in place. The 730pm Ranger talk at the South Rim campground amphitheater was enjoyable. We stayed two nights at the South Rim campground and again, not sure I'd recommend it. The sites are small and very close to each other. Our neighbors the first night were incredibly loud until almost 2am in the morning. If you're in the area it's definitely worth stopping by for half a day. We visited the South Rim in late July of 2021.

Many of the spaces in the campground are very tight and vehicles have to be parked on the road. From about 4 until 7 there was a steady stream of cars without reservations traveling through Loops A and B looking for spaces. Loop C isnt very well publicized but it is first come first served and there were empty spaces but it appeared that people were leaving when there was nothing in A or B. The bathrooms were not as clean as other parks we have visited. The campground was fairly quiet though and there was a beautiful sunset. If you are traveling westbound from Denver be aware that 50 is closed intermittently during the day and plan your travel accordingly. The day we traveled 70 west was also closed due to a mudslide. CoDot was very helpful but there was not much they could suggest to make westbound travel easier. All that said, the canyon is beautiful and the rim drive is fantastic. It was well worth the trip.

The viewpoints along the scenic drive were well marked. Each viewpoint had a small trail leading up to it, perfect for all ages.
The campground was also well maintained. I was very happy to see that my campsite had a bear box. I tried to purchase a bear container well beforehand and they were sold out.
My favorite moment from Black Canyon of the Gunnison was waking up very early in the morning at my campsite and enjoying the view of stars of the clear dark sky and the sound of the Gunnison River echoing out of the canyon.
