No reservation necessary. All you have to do is show up and get on a site. They are unaware of who is coming and going. The campground was pretty crowded so they must be making money. We used to stay here years ago and it was quite different. If you pulled in and the check-in station was unattended they would eventually come by your site to verify/confirm your reservation. We would receive a pass to come and go in our vehicle. No pass necessary now. Anyone can come and go at any time. This is a beautiful area, but not managed very well. Especially if you want to stay in the campground.
Now for the bad, the “Park” is very big, one of the largest in the southeast this means often an hour-long drive on winding roads to reach an interesting hiking trail head. The entrance from the east from Oneida Tennessee Highway 297 is one of the steepest in the southeast. It is a 13% grade with four switchbacks; however, at the foot of this canyon is one of the prettiest rivers in the southeast.
We camped at Big South Fork National River & Rec Area, Bandy Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
