Best wishes for the new year!
1. Its central location in the preserve.
2. It is a small loop road campground. Even the youngest of bike riders can go around easily and safely.
3. Clean bathrooms.
4. SMALL campground. I think there are less than 40 sites in the whole place.
5. It is in the middle of an International Dark Sky area. We were there Dec 2020 and saw the Christmas star and the arm of the milky way.
6. The fishing in the canal across the road is pretty good.
On the downside the whole campground is between 25 and 250 meters from the Tamiami Trail (US 41) where cars and trucks drive by at 55+ mph day and night (fewer at night but still frequent). This makes the place a little noisy in spite of it being 20+ miles from any town or gas station.
Be sure to have food and provisions for your whole stay unless driving to a town is part of your plans.
The best part of the whole National Preserve experience for me is the opportunity to go off trail and explore anywhere your heart desires. This one off type of hiking makes for fewer trails that can scar the various plant communities. The ecology of this vast preserve is wonderful to explore and staying at Midway put us right in the middle of it.
