Beautiful Scenery

The mesquite nettles in the grassed area made it difficult to pitch a tent. The loose livestock was kind of cute, but annoying as the horses grazed right next to our tents during the nights. The price of the campsite was especially good and even better with a Parks Pass.

The tent site I was assigned (#51) there was no privacy and I was surrounded by motorhomes & truck campers. It would be nice to have tent campers have their own area.

We hope the Chisos Mtn. project is completed in the 2-year estimate. Laundry and shower facilities at Rio Grande Village certainty need updating. The campground was excellent. The people were all very polite and friendly. 3rd trip there and we will be back in another few years. I would state a cell tower at the VC would make for a safer overall park, but I do realize the disadvantages.Thank you

Small area so you see neighbors alot. Lots of people have flashlights and headlamps at night so if looking at stars you will want to walk or drive somewhere better.

A simple, flat area with little separation between sites, but reasonably quiet and friendly. Good hikes from campground, even down to the river and nice view from overlook. Aramark staff definitely unfriendly and not helpful. Store is very convenient with good survival items and fuel and propane cheap and easy to arrange. Also showers and laundry are great to have available. You should have a vehicle to get around in if youll be there more than a couple days.Hasnt changed much in the 52 years Ive been going there. There are virtually no ranger led activities or talks. The interpretive center is totally worthless. Even low on affinity books.

We enjoyed the quiet space, wading across the Rio to Mexico, and the grazing cows that came to visit in the evening. Even they know the grass is greener on this side!!

Overall Rio Grande Village campsite is adequate. There is very little gravel at the sites. Ours was mostly dirt including under the shelter/table. When dry it is extremely dusty, and apparently when wet it turns to muck, judging by the ruts at other sites. The bathrooms were kept clean. At night, cows wold cross the river from Mexico and graze on the (irrigated) grass, so we could hear them chomping and moo-ing; so, watch out for the cowpies.

We have been fans of Big Bend since 1974. Between the services of Recreation.gov and lack of internet access at the park, it is almost impossible to make any plans to visit the park. If you are lucky enough to get a reservation service person who is actually familiar with Big Bend, you are very lucky. Furthermore, the restrictions and new rules for the roadside and rustic sites make it almost impossible to successfully reserve one. Furthermore, people who want to change or cancel reservations, for a $10 charge, have to find a way to communicate with the reservation service with no internet connectivity. What results are many unused campsites and frustrated visitors.

Considering that Covid closed the hot springs and all the exhibits at ranger stations and visitor centers, the trip was fun and adventurous. We thought it odd the the campground were advertised as full but entire sections were empty. If 50% capacity was being observed, why not space out campers instead of filling one section and leaving another empty?

Rio Grande was a wonderful place to stay the night. We were treated to the most amazing sunset, but also to crazy winds packing up the next morning. Half of the sites were closed due to COVID, and that made the camp a lot quieter. It was a beautiful site.

We loved our stay at Big Bend National Park. So much to do and not enough time. Also, the employees at the park are so friendly and helpful.
