The campground itself is perfectly fine - easy to get in and out of, nice spots, bathrooms, etc. However I was truly amazed at the lack of camping etiquette of others - loud music and shouting past midnight, slamming car doors at 5a, shining lights into other's campsites, etc. Just be aware if you're a sensitive sleeper!

This was a wonderful stay. We had site 27 and it was perfect in terms of size (6-person dome tent used for two of us), and felt very private. The sites in the central part of the campground were very exposed, each with shade shelter and picnic table, whereas ours had no shelter but had plenty of tree cover. I would not have enjoyed camping in the central part of the campground since there is no privacy whatsoever. Visitors should note that apparently regardless of forecast winds can pick up very strongly at random. We had a very windy night where steady windspeed was clocked at around 30mph not including gusts. Several tents in the central area of the campground did not survive this wind. Bathrooms were clean. The entire campground seemed to abide by the quiet hours rules (more or less). And the hosts were very present and friendly. Javelinas, cows, coyotes, and roadrunners were aplenty, including a few of these crossing right through our site. We managed to see all three primary areas of the park with four nights camping. I only wish we'd had a chance to hike the Lost Mine Trail. Next time.December, it turns out, is a perfect time to visit Big Bend. The trek across the river to Boquillas was worth it only because of the 'experience'. My daughter and I developed a mock-marketing plan for the locals afterwards, because they seem so desperate to sell the exact same thing at each of their vendor tables. They'd do better if each vendor had just one unique type of item. They were all very nice, but it's still a surreal experience. It almost felt like we were walking through a village in Afghanistan. And remember your passport! If you do visit the village, note that they really want you to accept a tour guide who works for tips, and will offer to let you ride a horse, mule, or in a truck. The walk is easy, so unless you're desperate for an expensive short ride on a hooved animal, just walk it. There was something about walking into Mexico that we liked.

This site (27) is listed as a VERY narrow site. Our 24Lx10Hx8W trailer had plenty of room. And room for our pickup too. Its close to but not right next to bathroom and water source. Lots of shade if you are absolutely dependent on solar. Camp host was very amenable. Lovely site!

Close to off road trails like old ore and River road. Walking distance to the store, showers, and laundry. Close popular attractions like the hot springs and boquillas canyon, Earnst Tinjaja and is the best place to catch a big bend sunset from the Rio grande village nature trail!! One of our favorite places to camp!!

The Rio Grande campground. We had a shaded site and that made all the difference. Hiked both the Santa Elena Canyon and Window trails. Enjoyed them both. We were there in mid April and the cacti were blooming. It was very hot however.

I love this site so much (27). It's so big and private. The camp hosts were so wonderful (Lou and Jenny) and helped us feel so cared about. This is my third time at this site and I will always try to stay here.

Was not aware our site was a generator free site. I use a C-pap and would have liked to be made aware of this issue! Also while looking for a site at Chisos it would have been nice if there was some indication that our 31 ft Rv was too long. I would have stopped trying there for a site. The park was beautiful and really enjoyed our night there. We spent the next day traveling through and then did the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive! Stayed a night at Terlingua American Legion And it was part of HH!

We enjoyed Big Bend because we were unfamiliar with deserts. The Rio Grande Village campsite was clean. The hot springs was good for a soak and then cooling off in the river.

I love this park, this being my 12th visit. The reservation system makescamping in national parks extremely difficult, frustrating and almost impossible unless reservations are made well in advance. Although the campground was "officially" full, the campground was half-empty, people making reservations far in advance and then not showing up or leaving early. In 8 nights at the park, I was in 3 campsites. My second site was vacant for the two nights I was at my first site. Last year I was in 4 campsites in 8 nights!! People are made to find accommodations outside of the park and then drive in 80 miles or more one way to spend a day inside the park while half of the campsites are not occupied. Spontaneous travel, traveling across the country or spending months on the road and counting on staying at a national park are impossible. Many times there is no access to wi-fi to even check availability. All this, while campsites go unoccupied! The government gets its money, the camp host's job is easier, and the campers lose access to their parks! We need first-come, first serve campsites.

It was my first time visiting Big Bend. I had no idea how amazing this park would be. My wife and I had a blast. Will definitely be back!

5 star rating is based on the fact that Big Bend NP is spectacular. But the facilities left something to be desired. The restrooms were minimally maintained. There were no lights in the restrooms during our visit. I think they were fixed the day we left. The vendor that maintained the camp store, showers, and laundry was abysmal. For two dollars, you got 5 minutes of an ice cold to tepid shower. The employees at the camp store were equally disappointing. Courtesy or friendliness were out of the question, and providing correct change for anything over a 20 was beyond their mental capacity. Doing day trips into Chisos Basin is tricky from any other campground. The parking fills to capacity by late morning and the park rangers will not allow a vehicle to enter until one leaves. And there are not enough parking spots at the lost mine trailhead to accommodate the number of people who would like to take that trail. I would suggest that during peak season, someone should offer a shuttle from a parking lot outside of the basin that stops at the trailheads and points of interest inside the basin. That could reduce traffic and allow more people to enjoy the trails. All that being said, I would still highly recommend a visit to Big Bend. It is one of the most fascinating parks I have ever visited. Just don't go in the summer. It will kill you.
