The Park was in excellent condition...campsites, trails, amenities. The Park has a food truck behind the restaurant that has a limited menu, but makes great food.

Quiet time is 10 pm. My suggestion would be at time of darkness. Loud music playing til 10 pm.

Easily one of the most scenic campsites in all of USA. The drive to the campground is stunning and the wildlife viewing was a huge bonus. Such a great park and campground.

Very well kept and maintained campground. The rangers and camp host are nice and extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We have been camping in the Chisos for years and are always glad to be back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Chisos Basin campground. Our reserved sites were more than adequate for our large group. Good water. Good restrooms. Great camp host. Some us even had cell service in camp.

Chisos Basin is a very scenic place. The adjoining CCC-constructed trails are fantastic. We stayed at the campground for seven nights. The campground host, Mark, was great. Unfortunately, the restrooms were not cleaned regularly, and many of the sites were very steep. This is an old campground, and not suited for larger RVs.

The campground is a bit tight. I understand that there is limited space and you want to maximize what you have.

Campground has beautiful views and clean bathrooms with running water. Shaded picnic tables much appreciated. No cell service. Note: individual sites are inconsistent in level of openness/privacy. Mine happened to be completely open with no division between it and other sites or the road, natural or artificial. It made it feel like camping on display.

Outstanding park. Camped in a 12 foot teardrop trailer and was very comfortable. Hiked South Rim loop and it was challenging and had spectacular views. Also hiked Windows and Oak Springs, both were great. Bonus: saw several Mexican Brown Bears on the Windows trail including a large male (who walked me down the trail 200 yards until he could go down into the creek bed) and a mother with two cubs. Also 12+ deer on the South Rim. As always the park is clean and the staff friendly and helpful but only tell cool people...it's already too crowded. A++

Thoroughly enjoyed tent camping at Chisos Basin in Big Bend for 3 nights. The camping spots are each very unique and knowing where to plop your tent is not intuitive. We cleared several rocks before setting up. We use tarps underneath for additional protection (you may not be able to setup without rocks underneath your tent). The night sky is amazing when cloud cover is low. Be advised that the camping spots are very closely packed together and you will hear other campers (conversations, coughing, kids...). They have spigots for drinking water and a separate dish cleaning station by the bathrooms. While this is very useful, it didn't have hot water or hand towels (bring a towel). The roads are sporty in places. We drove a dirt road to hike at Grapevine Hills (see Balanced Rock, highly recommended). Likely best to have a high clearance vehicle (SUV, truck) for that particular hike. All other roads we used were paved. We saw one javelina crossing the road and a fox walked through our campground! No bear or cat sightings. Be sure to put all food away neatly in the storage box!

We were booked into a 20 foot max site, which was fine for our van, but the road was not widened enough to allow other vehicles to easily pass by us and we could not pull any further off the road because of the VERY large rocks placed at the edge of the road. There were also posts installed which prevented parking further off the road, but they were at least spaced out and higher so more visible when parking and didnt impact us existing our unit. The large rocks were located where units would have their exit, so we couldnt put out our door mat or exit from our sliding door without stepping on/around a rock. I can understand the park not wanting units parked on the grass, but dont understand why pavement is not widened at the site to allow space to park a 20 foot unit. These rocks are a major tripping hazard at low now or night conditions and because of their size and frequently make parking and exiting the unit difficult.

Sites at the Basin campground gave us a great launching point for visits to Boquillas Canyon, Rio Grande Hot Springs, Balanced Rock, Santa Elena Canyon, Tuffs Canyon, as well as hikes of Lost Mines trail, Window trail, Laguna Meadow trail, South Rim trail, Boot Canyon trail, Emory Peak trail and Pinnacles trail. Our site had a covered table, fresh water and was located near restrooms. We would highly consider making use of the Basin campground on future trips.

By my estimation 40% of all booked sites had no shows.'Site Hoggers' take advantage of the low camping rates and just book as many dates as they can afford and then only show up when it's convenient. That 40% has a significant economic impact on the surrounding areas. All the entities involved, recreation.gov the National Park Service etc, need to put their heads together to figure out a way to discourage no shows by having significant penalties in the form of fines or, perhaps, even having camping privileges suspended. The public at large is simply not served by a system that allows this to continue and the economic impact locally cannot be ignored

It's imperative to plan ahead to be able to get a campsite at Chisos Basin campground since no matter what time of year you go, it's popular. There's a reason for that: the campground is surrounded by picturesque mountain scenery. Hiking trails are nearby, including one of our favorites, The Window Trail. The lodge, store, and restaurant are within walking distance. Ranger talks are offered some days. Wildlife such as roadrunners and other native birds, javalinas, and even bears can be seen. The lodge, store, and restaurant are within walking distance. The area is quite remote with no gas station or cell coverage and gives a feeling of disconnecting to enjoy nature. The actual campsites, while level, are very close together, so no solitude there. The bathrooms have running water and flush toilets, but no showers. Dishwashing sinks are available as well. Campsites have water spigots for drinking water only.
