Day 1: 7 a.m. hike at the Mining Trail - beautiful, cool, very windy at the top; lunch break at camp because the roads were under construction and closed from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.; afternoon hike at Santa Elena - we hiked the trail and down into the water for another mile. The hike back was very warm - bring lots of water!
Day 2: 8:30 a.m. hike at Boquillas - we saw wild (?) horses! A few people selling tourist souvenirs as well. Walked the Rio Grande Nature Trail. Stopped for gatorade and ice cream at the campground corner store. Then hiked the Balanced Rock trail - such a cool landscape there. Lunch break at camp and then hiked the Window Trail in the afternoon - again very warm, bring lots of water!
Great star viewing the second night.
Heads up: no showers - coin showers are closed because of COVID, so bring lots of baby wipes. Check for road closures. Tie your tent down securely because it gets very windy at night.
No showers, but we knew that going into it. The restrooms did have a dishwashing sink which is very handy--again, not every National Park campground has had this perk.
We enjoyed the Roadrunner that visited the campground each evening while we were there!
The drive up to the campground on the Basin Road is also a great experience. It does not take terribly long. While we were there, it was undergoing construction and would be closed for parts of the day, then open with delays at other parts. Even the delays were not that long. The system they had to deal with the traffic and construction seemed to be as efficient as it could be under the circumstances. You just had to be planful to make sure you were out of the Basin in time if you wanted to visit another part of the Park.
