The camp stewards at Chisos Basin were incredibly helpful and informative. The camp site was well-maintained, and I appreciated how much communication and effort went into making sure all the visitors left minimal impact on the local wildlife and environment. It's a truly special place and I look forward to returning.

We hiked the window trail the first afternoon & did the South Rim trail the second day. After each hike we relaxed with a good hot meal at the Basin Restaurant. Nighttime was super peaceful & the stargazing is amazing! We love it at BBNP!!

Both the park and the campground were nicer than we expected, despite the plus-100 degree heat everyday. My wife and I were particularly impressed with the very friendly and helpful campground host, George Hazelhurst. While we camp fairly frequently in hosted-campgrounds, we seldom have interacted with the campground host other than to check-in in to our camping spot. George came by our campsite on is own and entered into a very informative and fun discussion about the park, his job, and his experiences at the park. He was just tremendous! For an unpaid volunteer, he was more than anyone could have expected or have hoped for!

Beautiful area with a wonderful view. My only complaint is that lights outside the restrooms are left on all night, polluting the wonderful view of the night sky. This is especially disappointing considering this is an International Dark Sky Park.

Pretty spacious site with wonderful views of the mountains. Bathrooms were fairly clean and plenty of accessible drinking water.

As described, the size and levelness of campsites varies but we found our space to be adequate.Note that some sites have cover over picnic table others do not. We also happened to have one of the several water spigots near by. There is generally no separation between camp sites and so sound (including early departure or late arrivals, snoring and noise carries far and easily). Depending on the site, people may cut through your site to reach bathrooms or hiking trails.

Only negative about the campsites is that many are no where near level (for RV/trailer)

This was my second visit to Big Bend. Last time I was down in Rio Grande Village, but opted for a different and much cooler place to camp this time. Had a fantastic time camping in the basin. Cooler, more private, and I swear the stars were more stunning!

Beautiful campsite, spots are pretty close together. Some spots have a smaller parking area that are difficult for a trailer. Great location to do the Window Trail.

Campground was as expected. Reservation was accurately handled. Rangers visible and friendly. Bathrooms accessible and adequately supplied. There was more visitors than I have experienced in the past which means more potential for noise, etc. The Big Bend park and Chisos campground have grown in popularity. They have increased the number of camp sites, facilities, etc.. It doesn't feel as much like a hidden gem anymore, but I can't blame them for having such a beautiful park that attracts visitors.

Absolutely wonderful trip. We camped in the Chisos Basin the first weekend in May and were lucky that the heat was mild.

Day 1: 7 a.m. hike at the Mining Trail - beautiful, cool, very windy at the top; lunch break at camp because the roads were under construction and closed from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.; afternoon hike at Santa Elena - we hiked the trail and down into the water for another mile. The hike back was very warm - bring lots of water!
Day 2: 8:30 a.m. hike at Boquillas - we saw wild (?) horses! A few people selling tourist souvenirs as well. Walked the Rio Grande Nature Trail. Stopped for gatorade and ice cream at the campground corner store. Then hiked the Balanced Rock trail - such a cool landscape there. Lunch break at camp and then hiked the Window Trail in the afternoon - again very warm, bring lots of water!
Great star viewing the second night.

Heads up: no showers - coin showers are closed because of COVID, so bring lots of baby wipes. Check for road closures. Tie your tent down securely because it gets very windy at night.

We had a great time and the rangers were super nice and helpful. So much to see at this park. My only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. We were there 3 days but wish we had a full week.

The Basin was a beautiful place to car camp. You're surrounded by mountains and close to several trails. I liked that our site had a shade shelter on a cement pad, which was also perfect for hanging a hammock. Each site had its own bear box, which is very nice--some parks you have to share with other campers. We could watch the sunset thru The Window. The night skies were gorgeous. There was minimal lighting at the campground which helped to enjoy the night sky. Other campers also seemed conscientious of keeping their camp site lighting to the absolute minimum as well. Our campground host was friendly and helpful. He stopped by to chat as he was driving around. The other campground host stopped by when we first arrived to ask if we had any questions. That has never happened at any other National Park we've camped at.

No showers, but we knew that going into it. The restrooms did have a dishwashing sink which is very handy--again, not every National Park campground has had this perk.

We enjoyed the Roadrunner that visited the campground each evening while we were there!

The drive up to the campground on the Basin Road is also a great experience. It does not take terribly long. While we were there, it was undergoing construction and would be closed for parts of the day, then open with delays at other parts. Even the delays were not that long. The system they had to deal with the traffic and construction seemed to be as efficient as it could be under the circumstances. You just had to be planful to make sure you were out of the Basin in time if you wanted to visit another part of the Park.

We loved our time here. Do pay attention when they give rig size limitations and the grade of the mountain getting to the campground. We enjoyed the window view hike from the campground. Easy hike. We saw birds, rabbits and deer. We did a few other short hikes. We were here for only 2 nights. I wished I had another 2 days but campground space was limited.
