First, Big Bend National Park and the Chisos Basin are beautiful and well worth visiting. I've been coming here for many years. Just be aware that most of the camp sites in the Chisos campground are very small and close together. Most of them have very little space for parking anything but one vehicle. Site 16 is a good site and has better than average parking space for a small trailer (18' or less) plus a moderate sized tow vehicle. I managed to squeeze my 13' teardrop camper plus my Ford F250 truck into the parking spot, just barely. The other thing to be aware of with site 16 is that the parking spot is actually across the road from the covered picnic table and tent site. So the road splits the site. This was not an issue for me, but could be for some folks who don't want to haul a bunch of gear and tents across the road from their car. The good news is that the camping site itself has a nice shade structure over the picnic table and has good level ground next to it for a tent. The parking space across the road is fairly level for a trailer.

Campground was in a spectacular location. Hosts were helpful.

The sites are VERY close together and virtually none of them are level, so know that going in. We were in a RTT, and the level would have been harsh, were it not for the blocks that I brought.Other than that, it was great. The crowd, and it was FULL, was great. Super quiet. It was incredibly windy, but whatever.

This location has the most impressive 360 views of any campsite I've ever visited! From the panoramic views to minute details, the camping area alone would have been worth the long trip. Nearby hiking and drives with additional amazing panoramas make this park a worthwhile effort to see! Well informed Park Rangers with genuine concern about wildlife and campers safety and interaction was the exceptional highlight of the entire experience! We plan to come back!

We loved Chisos Basin Loop 1, Site 16! The view through the window and looking up at Casa Grande from our table was amazing. It wasnt a level site for our tent, but we made it work. The bathrooms were fine and the camp host was very helpful. In hot May, this was the only place to camp in Big Bend. It was a long drive to Rio Grande Village to shower, which was a disappointment and it was so hot there, we understood why camping in that campground was kept to a minimum. Well be back someday, but it will be during the winter when it is cooler there.

We stayed January 15th, 2024 at for 3 nights on site 16 and enjoyed the campground and surrounding facilities. The host was the friendliest and most helpful man weve ever encountered at a park. Very accommodating and helpful. A great asset for the campground.

Very nice sites, but close together. Crushed gravel tent pads. Good restrooms and dish washing station. Close to Window Trail.

Worst site in the basin campground. You have to park across the street from your site, so you get to haul all of your equipment twice as far. Additionally, you are crammed in like cord wood at this campground. Zero privacy, lots of noise, barking dogs, stereos, vehicles running,... I would never stay here again. Also, all of the facilities are run down. Broken sinks, no locks on bathroom stalls, ... It looks like NOTHING in BBNP has been updated or maintained since the 60's. Some jerk kept leaving his bagged dog poop in the mens bathroom.

Chisos Basin is a fantastic campground! It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and a great base of operations for many of the parks best hikes. Water and bathroom facilities were readily available and the campground was clean. The rangers were very friendly and came by to say hello and make sure we were settled in alright. I’d say after experiencing many national park campgrounds this is definitely one of my favorites.

The Campground volunteer couple from the State of Washington were awesome! As someone else had overstayed their welcome in the spot I reserved, left their travel trailer there, left the park, and weren't expected to return until 7:00 pm that day; I could not use the space I reserved several weeks earlier. This couple went out of their way to find a suitable site for my needs. Although the site I reserved was a generator site, and the site I was assigned was not, it actually worked out better for my needs. Thanks to them again!

The park is as beautiful as I remember, it had been 25 years since I had been there. The roads and trails were in great conditions, the camping areas were also in great shape. My only complaints were there are no showers available for the public, the week before I spent at Fort Davis State park, they have showers, I don't understand why the biggest park in Texas can't have the same amenities as the state park. My other complaint was about having to wear mask in all federal building, it should be my choice not a rule from the idiots up in Washington.

Overall the park is beautiful.

The camp rangers were very kind and helpful. The night I arrived, there was a hail storm, and the rangers came and checked on me. They helped me move my car to the right location, and the next morning, they asked if I had slept okay. I felt safe and happy staying in Chisos with these people.

Loved Chisos, but we got the last space, #16 and it is absolutely the WORST camping experience in my life. You park your RV right next to #18 and they do their camping experience with feet of your door. Meanwhile, the grill and cover for #16 is across the road and next to a new pathway to the lavatory. Whoever thought this one out needed some personal experience. #16 should be a tent site only! Keep the parking, but there is plenty of space next to the grill and cover to make a beautiful tent pad and create harmony for both campsites, #16 and 18.

I had been stalking the reservation site for weeks when I finally saw two nights available for just the week I wanted. I reserved my spot without even looking where it was located, and it couldn't have turned out any better. A few days before we were scheduled to arrive, I got a call saying our site would be under renovation, and we would be moved to another, administratively closed site without covering. The host was able to accommodate us with an even better view AND with shade once we arrived. The site was equipped with everything we would need also. Not to be overlooked either was Chisos Basin's proximity to not only so many trails but the lodge, which was especially helpful when the road to and from the site was closed for construction. The bathrooms were well-kept, and the overall site was well-maintained. I would book another site at Chisos Basin in a heartbeat!

It was great being able to leave the campsite on foot and go on an amazing hike! And the stars at night and the sun rising AND setting on the hills around us! It was hard to leave.

Amazing location in the park, with great hikes starting in or near the campground. Plenty of bathrooms with flush toilets and a mess sink. Several potable water spigots scattered around. Picnic tables under stone structures were nice. The sites were fairly unlevel. No showers available. We were there during winter storm which closed the roads twice. Cooler and snowier here versus other campgrounds in the park but the view is worth it.

We had a fantastic night at Chisos Campground. As soon as we arrived near sunset we hiked up to the window overlook near the lodge and enjoyed the setting sun. It was a little cool so we didn’t get to enjoy sitting outside for dinner but as soon as we bundled up and headed out to stargaze we were mesmerized. We were able to see constellations and the Milky Way with the naked eye, an experience like no other! I drove our approx 24ft Motorhome down into the basin and it was fine. Lots of construction so pay attention to road closings if you have an itinerary the next day, we had to be out by 8AM or wait until 11AM.
@GeneS950 · Camped on Jan 4, 2021 at Campsite #16
We were lucky enough to be there after it snowed and it was beautiful. The drive is tight but doable in a 25' motorhome. Hiking in the snow in the morning then walking in shorts on a trail in the afternoon. Where else can you do that? It was awesome ??
