Such a lovely spot. I was blessed with wonderful weather in early November, and watching the beautiful sunset and a beautiful sunrise, accompanied by the sound of the breaking waves was a really special treat.

Site 30 on the beach side next to the beach access. Camp hosts and park rangers were great.

Camping like I've never experienced! Being so close to the ocean was magnificent and we got to see the wild horses up close (but not too close!). This was my six-year-old niece's first time camping and seeing the ocean, and a truly unforgettable experience for us all. We stayed on Oceanside Loop 2 Site 30 during the first week of June and didn't have any issue with mosquitos, which we had been warned about. Locals said that time of year tends to be less buggy than later in the summer. We also enjoyed coffee and breakfast at "5 Tides" one morning-- only a ten minute drive from the site. There was a huge storm one night and our tents stayed up despite the heavy wind. We didn't have any special stakes for camping on sand.

This location is very nice. It's level, and there are bushes/plants as mentioned in other reviews that provide for protection against strong winds. We came on a very cold windy day in March, so the wind was nearly 40 mph. My 2 girls ended up taking cover from the wind by staying in the area protected by the bushes. We cooked vegetable foil packets over the campfire, and cooked steak and mushrooms over our portable stove, and the food turned so delicious. We brought our food over to the little windless spot to eat, otherwise our food would turn cold quickly due to the fierce wind. Our spot was just a short walk to the restroom, but not too close that we felt uncomfortable. We're also right next to the pathway that leads to the beach. It was fun seeing other campers walk by but we also had a good sense of privacy in our spot, despite being next to the public walking path. I like that there are not too many campers in this loop. We could literaly walk to the beach in a minute. It was so awesome. We didn't see any horses at our campsite this trip. But we saw a herd of them on the road next to the visitor center.

Camped in our 25ft motorhome and had Oceanside site 030 which we enjoyed! It sits directly next to the beach access path, and although we thought it might be a problem (people walking back and forth), it was actually not an issue at all. The traffic was minimal and the site is situated far enough and quite private with large sand dunes engulfing it from 2 sides. During our stay, the 2nd half (back part) of the paved back-in driveway was covered in extremely deep sand, so only the front half was suitable for our motorhome. Not a problem for us as we have a short 25ft Class-C, but something to take into account for larger rigs. Horses came by (and through) our loop and campsite day and night several times during our 2-day stay. No shade at the site, but even mid-August it was breezy enough to where we really had no need for the AC to be on in the motorhome. The Oceanfront campground is more busy and crowded than the Bayside one (where we camped for another 3 days). Oceanside is the place to be for sunrise watching (if you can get up early enough), and Bayside - for sunset! We parked our RV and used only bikes to get around. Bike paths lead everywhere around the seashore and were very safe even for our little kids to bike around. Mosquitos? Surprisingly minimal during our stay here (mid-August). Toilets? Primitive, with cold showers. But I doubt anyone's goal is to come here for the park's toilets or showers. The nature is where it is all at - and there is plenty of it! Loved our stay!

Beautiful place, very quiet. Don't leave any food out, even dog food. The horses are quite assertive and will come and get it.

I wanted to make one more trip to the beach before winter. I preferred the National Assateague campground because there was no restriction about dogs and site location and dogs were allowed on the beach. My site was quite convenient since there was a walkway to the beach next to it; although there is little vegetation, site #30 was well suited for a small pop-up and seemed a bit secluded since there was an alcove in the dune that afforded some privacy, especially if you also put up a tent. I was close enough to the outhouse facilities to be a quick walk but not too close to make it uncomfortable. The dune also acted as a slight wind break. I did not like the fact that generators were allowed. The times set aside for their use coincided with the exact times that you might be spending at your site. They are annoying and totally detract from the experience of being at a remote beach location. I did take some time to explore the trails and other locations and found them interesting. Next time I'll bring my bike and spend more time at the visitor center. Although it was a quick trip, it fit my expectations to walk the beach and enjoy the crashing waves.

Reservation system is a mess. Half the sites sat empty each day but had reserved signs on them.

Beautiful campsite right on the beach. The hosts were friendly, and the park was maintained beautifully. Would love to return if we are lucky enough to get reservations again!

Entire experience was pretty much what we expected. While seeing the wild horses weren't the draw for me, it was very neat to see them roaming thru the campsites. we stayed in oceanside loop 2 and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. One issue with the campground...the water pressure at the potable water pump at the dump station was almost non-existent. We stopped on arrival to top off our freshwater tank (class c motorhome) and it took way too long to fill. Thankfully no one else was waiting to use the dump station or freshwater. We're already planning a trip for next year.

Love the place, except for the wind LOL. Then again, what do you expect on the continent's leading edge. We go every year, it's a unique place both for the vistas and the fauna/flora. Not to be fatalistic, but if I were you, see it before the ocean rises.
