Site C48, has views of the Sound, path to the beach for a sunset, stayed mid-May, bugs not bad, toilets are improved pit style, showers decent but cold water (didn't take one). Now for the cautionary notes: horses are everywhere in the campground, we left out a sub sandwich for a few minutes and suddenly the horses were upon it, knocking it to the ground and ate the whole thing. So don't leave food out even for a minute! Also, overnight a raccoon got into the secured food locker under the picnic table, crawled its way into our food box and ate only our chocolate chip cookies! Also the horses like to hang out around smokey campfires (keeps bugs away), so we abandoned the idea of a fire that night. And they sometimes charge each other to establish dominance over other females. We were chased around our vehicle and I hopped on top of a picnic table for safety, then later had to dive into a vehicle while they charged around our campsite again. Anytime you see a pile of horse poo, a stud pile, that means they come around and find out who's been there. And we had a stud pile at the back of our site, ended up in a horse stampede for about a half hour. Not safe for children at all! Other than that, it was an awesome experience! We actually loved it!

Assateague Island NS is a contrast in ocean environments. The pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the quiet Bay on the other side. February thru April are good times to camp and explore on the Bay side because there are no insects and few people. Many people come to see the wild ponies but there is a host of other wildlife to experience in Assateague. The staff are friendly and helpful. And, might as well address the gorilla in the room: This National Seashore is in danger just like all the other sites that the NPS administers. If you care about these gems and agree with the notion that National Parks are America's best idea, please get involved. Your representatives need to hear from you that more cuts to the NPS, which was already understaffed and underfunded, is unacceptable. Once they are gone, we won't get them back. YOUR PUBLIC LANDS!!

Was very cold, windy but it was mid December. Water was shut off. Saw lots of wildlife, horses, deer, fox, turkeys.

I always love Assateague, but what a thrill to experience it in early November when the water is still relatively warm and the mosquitos and crowds are all but gone. Campsite C48 is spectacular, extending out the back side all the way to the bayshore. It is the best site on the island, in my opinion. My dog and I walked up and down the shore multiple times a day, experiencing it in all lights. We also launched our paddleboards right from our own campsite and explored the salt marshes and the bay. And morning coffee with a bayview is divine. The ocean is a mile walk or quick bike ride away.

Had a great time

We stayed in the Bay Loop (C) and it was fantastic. Very quiet and peaceful. We've heard alot about insects plaguing campers but since we were there the week of April 22, there were virtually no insects to contend with. The nature trail / boardwalk over the marsh area is a "must see." Roads are great for biking/walking.

Camped in our 25ft motorhome and had Bayside site C48 which we loved! I think it is one of the best sites in the loop. It is a large, pull-though, direct waterfront site (with no other campers in your view) and has its own little path leading to water and beach. We launched our kayaks and paddle boards from here. Cool hidden canals in between all the marsh grass to paddle through where we saw blue crabs, horseshoe crabs, a ray, fish, and birds. Horses came by (and through) our loop and campsite day and night several times during our 3-day stay. No shade at the RV parking spot, but even mid-August it was breezy enough to where we really had no need for the AC to be on in the motorhome. The Bayside campground was also much less busy and more quiet than the Oceanfront campground (where we camped another 2 days). Bayside campground is the place to be for sunset watching! We parked our RV and used only bikes to get around. Bike paths lead everywhere around the seashore and were very safe even for our little kids to bike around. Mosquitos? Yes, more than other places - but manageable. Toilets? Primitive, with cold showers and no electricity when it gets dark. But I doubt anyone's goal is to come here for the park's toilets or showers. The nature is where it is all at - and there is plenty of it! Loved our stay!

We try to get to Assateague multiple times a year. We love the combination of both the bay and beach with the horses and birds. During our spring visit the horses were all over the campground and very spirited. We saw pregnant mare and got to see young horses during our fall trip. It was great to go out and drive along the beach in our 4 X 4 and plan on doing that again. The only downside is that many more people have discovered Assateague and it's not as quiet as in the past during the off season.

The sunsets and night sky views are amazing! Saw ponies upon waking up in the morning.
Highly recommend the Bayside camp sites.

Check-in was not difficult although we had to go park and walk in and speak through a tiny cutout that was at about my knee level.
Directions to our site were easy and it was a pull-through and we had a great view of the bay.
The entire CG was very clean and appeared to be well kept.
Although we reserved our campsite for 3 days we left after 2. We felt we'd seen everything there was to see.

A must visit National Park! Beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches and well maintained campsites. Wish there was flush toilets and sinks instead of pit toilets, but would still camp there again!

Such a beautiful place. A national treasure ??

As always a great time, come prepared for life in a salt marsh and you will enjoy. Lots of flying insects. Horses visited almost everyday. One down side of a bayside site, other campers seems to think crossing through your site to get bay access is acceptable. Try to be a good neighbor but rolling a canoe past my table with out asking is a bit over the top .

If you haven't been to the Oceanside sites before the sign is small and can be missed. Just know that once you go through the toll check in is the first right. Just past that is the road to the maintenance yard. Immediately after the Bayside Camping entrance you will turn left for the Oceanside sites. First 1-19 and down a bit further you'll see 20 and above. There's no mention of loop 1 or 2 only site number!
