Our Boy Scout Troop took advantage of the Organized Group Camping available just South of the North Beach. There are (5) Group sites. There is very little protection from the wind so we made our own wooden stakes to hold our tents down in the sand. Beautiful ocean views with easy beach access. The campsites are a short 100 yards from the parking area. Excellent cell coverage. We highly recommend both of the short films at the Visitor Center located on the mainland.

Ever wonder where one could drive on the beach and camp? A place where one could go surfing, fishing and wildlife viewing just less than four hours from the nations capitol. It’s not an extreme trip, but the experience of being there is extreme in the sense of what the place has to offer as a national park on the east coast. Assateague Island is such a place and the main draw are the wild horses.

it was surprising to see that a majority of the camp spots for Maryland State Park and Assateague’s National Park Service were almost full as late as October. But if you use the park service websites to navigate camp spots that are still open, really makes registering online very convenient. If you want hot water for a shower, better try booking on the Maryland State Park side first, otherwise it will be a rustic temperate venture experience which I don’t mind. One pro venture experience I really appreciated was how they designed their picnic tables, the bottom portion under the table was actually storage with doors that opened on both ends, pretty cool. And if you’re going to troll for wild horses, this would be an ideal place to bring bicycles, you’ll be able to zip around the trails between the beach and marshland. Something we thought of after driving around in the car to each check spot. A bicycle would have been more ideal while getting great exercise to boot.
Also note that you’re only a two minute drive back to civilization. We found great breakfast just outside of Ocean City that was a ten minute drive away, the Breakfast Café on route 50. Still a family owned place with great diner food. If you want the chip beef you’ll need to get there early as it tends to sell out. But the blue crab omelet we had instead was just awesome.

Assateague is one of our favorite places to camp, there is no other place in the world that we have been that you can literally be at the beach 100% of the time! Over 20 years we have come to enjoy this very special place and have gained valuable knowledge over those years on how to make the trip enjoyable even with extreme weather and bugs. Its all about having the proper setup with a large tent that is stable and can be secured with many guy lines, a shade/screened canopy to get out of the sun and get any from the mosquitos, and a beach cart to haul the gear back & forth! Some must haves are extra long stakes (can never have enough), prepared food the week beforehand, then frozen and placed in a hard foam cooler(yeti style), a shovel and any toys adults & kids can enjoy. This year we saw over 30 horses at various times and always respect their beauty and power by giving them ample space to move through (we never store food in camp, only in our car and never unattended), a couple of deer, some bunny rabbits, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We'll be back next year!
