We loved camping with the wild ponies! The Visitor Center talks were great and our campsite hosts were great!

My site was A7 on the bayside. The horses were hanging out there all the time. The beach was nice, good weather but the waved was strong. The sunset was amazing. The bathroom is clean. They rounding a lot to be sure the everything was ok. This is an amazing place to have a couple days off to enjoy Mother Nature.

A great experience. Everything was wonderful except for the bathroom. The Government would condemn everyone's home if the bathrooms were kept like you keep them. Every hear of scrubbing or using a pressure washer to clean the showers? They were shameful, moldly - totally uncalled for. Just laziness on the Government part.

The island is beautiful and the trails had good educational boards that were in pretty good shape. The campground was clean and serviceable.

Assateague Island was wonderful - an amazing ocean beach. Our campsite was in the middle of things, although we still had space to feel we didn't have others on top of us, but there were other sites that were more private. The pit toilets were relatively clean and there was an adequate number for the campground.

It was our first time at Assateague National Island. We had a wonderful time. We saw so many horses and enjoyed the fishing and clamming and the beautiful beach. We will definitely be back.

While the facilities were fine and the rangers and camp host very helpful, I couldn't really deal with the mosquitos and the horseflies. They were horrible and really had a negative impact on my visit. Any time I tried to look at the horses, go for a walk, cook dinner, etc., I would get attacked, even though I was slathered in bug dope. That really diminished my enjoyment of the place- in fact, I left a day early because of it. If you are not equipped with a screenhouse or bug-proof trailer/camper, I would say wait to visit until after the first frost. Better to be cold than eaten alive!!!!!

The bayside camping offers more space between sites ( comparing to state camping) and just short drive to beach. Although more natural and rustic the horses are spectacular to watch.

We had a great time at Assateague. One of the reasons we wanted to go there was the wild ponies. They came to camping area twice, but we maintained our distance to avoid any issues. As the sites don't have electricity, we used a generator during non-quiet times hours when we were at the trailer. We did a lot of day trips, hikes and bike rides. The bathroom (compost toilets) was near our site and was well maintained. The weather was cooler and windier than expected as a storm was off-shore but being in a trailer we didn't have any issues.

Such an amazing experience. The campground is beautiful and we saw so many horses, deer, and other wildlife while visiting Assateague. It was windy but no bugs.

The island itself is BEAUTIFUL! The camp sites are nice and I loved waking up and hearing the horses roaming around. It was a once in a life time experience for sure. The beach is fabulous and probably one of my favorite. There is a lot of horse poop so just be mindful of where you step and put up your tent! But the horses make it worth it.

Camping sites are quite generous in size, there is room to spread out. There is NO SHADE in this area of the park, so be prepared with an awning or umbrellas if you plan to spend time around the campground. It is somewhat of a hike to the beach, especially if you have littles, so be prepared. The bike ride to the beach is quite nice, so if you have them bring bikes. There is also a nice stroll to the inlet where there are some paths and picnic tables as well. There are only 2 public showers per camping area. There is also a water pump. PONIES WANT YOUR STUFF, edible or otherwise. Remember that YOU are the invasive species here! DO NOT FEED OR TOUCH THEM.This is no joke, the ponies come through whenever they want day or night and it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to lock down and put away your stuff. The picnic tables are rigged with lockers underneath, but they have to be padlocked-the ponies can get into them. They will take tubes and bottles of sunscreen off the table, they will snatch your hamburger rolls and chips. We had a snapped closed bin of dog food that we stashed UNDER our camping rig and they dragged it out of its hiding space and managed to open it and knock it over, eating all the dog food. Lesson learned!
