We camped for 3 nights in site C-45 Bayside at Assateague National Park in early April. We enjoyed camping on the bay side for the first time; earlier trips had all been at the ocean side camp sites. We caught a break on the weather; it was a little chilly but sunny and nice enough to hike and ride bikes each day. And no bugs this early in the year! We really enjoyed our walks on the 3 main trails in the park. There had been significant improvements in both the 'Life of the Marsh' trail and the 'Life of the Woods' Trail since the last time we camped here. And the 'Life of the Dunes' trail was a fun walk, and interesting look at some of the artifacts of the history of Assateague Island before it became a national seashore. We were camping in a 5th wheel camper, so were were quite comfortable camping early in the year when they had not yet turned on the showers, and had no concerns camping in a campground with only vault toilets. The one suggestion I would have for the park would be to add a 2nd spot at the Dump Station / Fresh Water Fill-up station. We had a considerable wait for the dump station on the way out, and we were happy that nobody was in line behind us for the 20 minutes we tied up the Fresh Water Fill-up station on check-in day.

Where to begin...this place is amazing! The wild horses are beautiful, and since they are so used to people, [as long as you follow the park rules] they are as docile as can be. Since we got our campervan staying overnight on the island's Bayside loops (in the offseason because during the summer, the bugs will roast you more than the heat will!), and I can truly say it was more than we bargained for. Highlights included having our own private beach just a short walk through the wooded path, stargazing once the sun went down, and, of course, waking up to horses just hanging around the campsite. This place is a must; we will surely return in the spring!

You should not even try to call C45 a site for tents. There is almost no place to set up a tent. It also stinks like the vault toilet and since there really is no place with even smallest distance to the road to put up a tent there is no escaping even some of the odor. It was so bad that even though we arrived just before dusk, we left without even trying to camp. This was a huge disappointment.

The campsites were nicely spaced, but expect little shade. The beaches were lovely and the nature trails provided great access to this unique eco system.

We had a great level site, clean rest rooms and excellent staff and hosts.
The grounds were clean and several of the walk ways had been rebuilt.
Check in was fast and easy!
One of our favorite campgrounds on the east coast.
I highly recommend you give them a try when in the area.

Assateague is one of our absolute favorite parks, and one we return to year after year. Everything is so well maintained and the rangers and staff are so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend exploring the bayside waterways by kayak, especially at dusk!
