Assateagues campgrounds were wind-swept and some sites under water this past week. Fortunately, we changed our reservation on-line to avoid too much of both conditions; but it wound up costing us $10/ day to do that when we did.

We camped at spot 15 on loop 1 in mid September and it was the perfect location. Breezy, no bugs. Close to the beach, but far enough from other campers. The only problem some people might encounter is from the parking spot, to the camp area there is a little bit of a hill. So if you have mobility issues, I wouldn't suggest it.

We enjoyed the campground. Sites were not right on top of each other. We were in site B15 and it was perfect for our van. Easy walk up the dune to see the water and sunrise.

This site was wonderful. View of the water, not too far from the bathrooms, but far enough from other campers we felt isolated. Hoping to camp here annually

Always amazing and beautiful! This site is pretty large, very close to the ocean, there is a uphill slope from parking area to the firepit/table/ocean. We were there during a storm so we pitched the tent down the hill by the car, where it was less windy, but of course a lot more prone to collecting water. Overall, very cool spot.

Site 015, Tent, 9/20/22 to 9/22/22Our ratings this trip: The park, overall: 5This site, this trip: 3Bugs: 5 (1 = no bugs, 5 = can't leave the screen house) (wind from land the whole time we were there)Star viewing: 5 ( 1 = being view obstructed by trees, 5 = can see everything!) Birds watching: 3 (1 = low, 5 = lots) Horses, this trip: 0 (0 = none, 5 = disrupts visit)Noise: 1 (1 = quiet, 5 = loud) (only sound is the waves)Privacy: 2 (1 = None, 5 = Very) Although neighboring sites and road are not close, tent is can be seen by most. Cell service: (Verizon) Excellent on upper campsite, horrible to none existent at the car.Our review for this trip:One of our favorite sites. We like this site because there are options for location of tent and the ocean view. One problem is access to the camping area. Sand is steep from parking area to the site. It would not be a problem on dirt but on sand... Flies this trip were horrible (Breeze from the land). All the other times we were at this site, they were minimal. Wind was bad, one day we were not able to keep the screen tent up, which has happened before at this site. Regardless , we are planning to use this site in the future.

Great view. Not too close to only other near by site (013). Not much horse activity at the campsite. Love the horses but prefer them not to be in the campsite! Did have one small storm blow thru, would recommend not putting the tent up on the upper end of the campsite when a storm is coming because the wind can be strong. NOTE: section between campsite and the ocean is blocked off for breeding birds. This was not a problem since the path to the ocean was nearby. Cell phone: Verizon, reception was great at the top of campsite but not so good at parking spot.

This is the best place ever! We have stayed twice now at ocean side spots 15 and 27 for one week at a time and we just love it! Having the option to just walk out of your RV and be steps away from the ocean is just a great experience. A lot of reviewers mentioned sand flies but we did not encounter any of them; we camped mid-September and end of October.

This is my second time solo camping at the Oceanside campground at Assateague, after stumbling onto it during the Perseid meteor shower a few years ago. When I realized that Wow, you could camp right on the beach at Assateague, I was blown away. The walk-in sites are best for a tent camper; you won't hear or see a car or RV. Imagine waking up at night in your cozy tent and hearing the waves nearby, or sticking your head through the zipper to see the stars, free from tree cover. In the morning, wild horses may be walking past your picnic table.
The only drawback is the lack of showers. There are primitive (pit) toilets, and a water pump of potable water, but you're out of luck if you want to wash all over. It's well worth the slight inconvenience to sleep on the beach, though.

Beachside loop is an excellent location - certain sites you can see the ocean from your tent. Large picnic table with storage underneath. Firepit with grate. Clean facilities with running water, cold showers, vault toilets. Ponies came around frequently (we visited end of May). Beautiful sunsets/sunrises. Trails are a short walk. Bayside has kayaking, crabbing and more. You can get your ice and firewood within the park at the bayside store.

My first camping trip and one of my most favorite trips ever. I stayed on Oceanside which consist of more sand than grass. Close to the beach. Didnt have much of an issue with insects though I did bring bug spray consisting of deet. Theres really no shade so with having a canopy that definitely helped along with catching the most amazing breeze coming off of the beach. If staying on Oceanside I def recommend the sand stakes vs regular stakes. It can get pretty windy at times. The wood for the fire pit , I did find rather hard to light. Lighter fluid is a must. Though the reviews that I read made it seem as though there were no stores near by, The Food Lion , Dunkin Donut, Dominos and Subway is aprx 20 min away. Bring a jacket for late eve. They have outdoor cold showers with what I would call larger size spotta potty. I will be investing in a portable toilet for camping in the future. I wasnt crazy about the bathroom at all. You will definitely run across a few horses during your stay. Theyre very calm. Though I stayed at the drive in site vs walk in site I did notice its a decent walk from your vehicle to camp site just be mindful and try not to over pack. With the drive in site you dont have as long of a walk at all. With this being my first camp trip, I packed everything but the kitchen sink. With that being said I couldnt find anything I wanted or needed. Keep your list light and maybe use bins or totes with labels vs throwing everything into several bags. The sunset is breath taking. The breeze is unbelievable. The entire ambiance is amazing. For meals we cooked your basic hotdogs, hamburgers, eggs, sausage, Canadian bacon, muffins, and shisk kabobs. Simple meals. One eve we drove into town and picked up a pizza. Hope this helps.

I come here to fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the shore and to see stars. Its a beautiful place at night, and Ive seen some incredible sunrises here as well. Plan for wind if youre camping. Long stakes are a must, and you will want to bring bug spray.
