Unfortunately, I would love to stay that overall we had a wonderful time. But thats not 100% the case. The trip itself was great. Our time there camping with our horses was great. But, every ranger we encountered wasnt as friendly and welcoming as we thought. When we arrived to check in I felt that the ranger was pretty dismissive to us. My dad was having a hard time hearing her and it was clear it was annoying to her. While we were checking in I was attempting to ask questions about all places that are okay for us to ride and the ranger had a bit of an attitude about it just wanted us to go. Upon arrival they gave my dad a military pass and we left without fully thinking while he stayed behind with our horses and they refused to let us back in simply because he wasnt in the truck. I stated he was at the camp site and if someone could go to the site. The ranger in the booth was very short with us and called over another ranger that approved us in a very argumentative manner. After simply accepting we had to pay for a pass because they wouldnt let us in otherwise even asking again if someone could go to your camp site to get my dad to confirm his ID for the military pass both rangers at each side of the truck continued in an argumentative tone while we were actively trying to pay for a pass to get back in.

Had a wonderful time!!! Check in was very easy and the rangers and park volunteers were great at checking on us telling us about the certain ponies to be aware of. Great experience will def go again. This was my 5x horse camping here!!

Beautiful campground. Campground had plenty of room to make corrals for the horses. Very nice picnic tables with storage underneath to secure food to prevent the ponies from getting into it. Pit toilets were clean and water was close to the site for the horses. Our horses got run off by the wild ponies in the middle of the night. The rangers and camp volunteers were amazingly helpful finding our horses. Very long and stressful night hunting them down. They ran 27 miles to chincoteqgue where they were corralled by the salt water cowboys. Thank you so much to chinoteqgue volunteer fire department and the rangers and camp volunteers in Assateague for helping us find our horses. I would not recommend camping with mares unless you can leave them in the trailer overnight. We thought the electric fence and pvc pipe corral would be effective in keeping the wild ponies away but it is not. We thought we would hear the wild ponies come back to camp but by the time we did the horses were gone. They run a lot faster than we do. One good thing I learned from the rangers is the wild ponies wont leave their territory so our horses were fine as they just kept going. So thankful they did not get hurt and just kept running. Riding on the beach was a dream come true and definitely a bucket list item. If you are going to camp with your horses you need a secure pen or keep them in the trailer. The little stallion had no trouble jumping into our electric pen made with step in posts. Beautiful location and amazingly helpful rangers and camp volunteer hosts!

We camped with our horses and had such a great time! Reservations and check-in was easy and the space was perfect. We were so close to the beach the beach, yet the dunes and foliage made a nice wind break. I also appreciated the gate at the entrance in case one of our horses were to get loose. We’ll be back next year!
