We visited during the shutdown. It was a bit confusing to find the national side of the camping area and we tried the state park office first. They were kind and gave us a map to find the correct camping area. The beach is beautiful and horses walked through in the morning. Definitely do not leave food or drinks outside unattended. The surf is rough and there is a drop-off just beyond the beach. Not a beach for Littles to play in the waves. We saw several adults wearing life vests while enjoying the beach and they stayed out of the water entirely. Lots of unleashed dogs! Perhaps folks were taking advantage of less personnel during shutdown. Bring your bikes because there are plenty of level paved areas. Mind the wild horses and give them space! Most of them just graze past but there was one larger horse that seemed agitated, was neighing alot and running about the camp area. If he charged, it isn't easy to get away. Overall I loved Assateague!

The flies made our stay a little unpleasant but overall it was fabulous. We saw lots of wildlife and lots of the horses. The view of the bay from the old ferry point was marvelous. We stayed in a bayside campsite. We will try for an ocean side campsite next time and hope that the flies will be less bothersome.

Bring a bike and explore the island with wild horses, beaches, ocean, sunsets, walking trails, and camping (no hook ups). We'll definitely go back!!

Outstanding! (except for one minor thing)The park is obviously beautiful. I camped in the A loop Bayside camping area. The camp host graciously welcomed my son and I. They were so friendly and helpful. I was concerned about the mosquito/fly situation. While they were present, it wasn't bad at all. The poor horses seemed more bothered by the bugs than the people. My only negative comment is the fact that everytime you leave the main gate of the park and return, you must represent you park pass and driver's license even though you are issued a large, blaze orange, dated window placard denoting your registered camper status. With the long lines at the park entrance to begin with, it would make more sense to have a "fast track" lane for already registered campers. (?) Otherwise a wonderful experience!

56 years ago I read the Marguerite Henry books and finally made it to the setting! Ponies and birds everywhere ! Lots to do in area on rainy days. Delicious food finds in nearby Ocean City. So beautiful and wild and wonderful!

The bathrooms were clean, and the campground was well-maintained. The camp hosts were amiable and available for questions if needed. We saw the greeting guest and talked to them about the wildlife. We love coming here.

Site A18, Tent, 10/10/22 to 10/12/22Our ratings this trip: The park, overall: 5This site, this trip: 4Bugs: 2 (1 = no bugs, 5 = can't leave the screen house)Star viewing: 4 ( 1 = being view obstructed by trees, 5 = can see everything) Birds watching: 5 (1 = low, 5 = lots)Horses: 0 (0 = none, 5 = disrupts visit)Noise: 3 (1 = quiet, 5 = loud) Privacy: 3 (1 = None, 5 = Very)Review:We like this site because there are options for location of tent in case of wind. Bugs this trip (note time of year), were minimal - just the little ones but they were not a bother. Some mosquitos when going towards the marsh, not at the fire ring or tent. We did use Termacell, which works really well. The reason we are not giving 5 stars this trip is that this site is very close to the restroom/showers, while this is normally a plus, and the breeze was sending some whiffs of their aroma. Not enough to ruin the trip but I could see where it has the potential to do so. All the other times we were at this site, we never noticed any thing. We are planning to use this site in the future.

We loved our time at Assateague! Our only regret is that we would have chosen a site on the ocean side had we understood the camp layout.
To be near the ocean during the day, we parked our rv on the ocean side. We camped late in the season and following a storm, so some areas were not useable. Overall the campground is well managed and we would love to return.

What a fabulous resource to have so close to us. We drop the rear gate on the toy hauler and can hear the horses eating and snorting. We deflate and drive on with all the dogs in relative seclusion

The mosquitoes ruined the vacation.
