The walk-in beach sites require preparation and planning. You will be lugging your gear through the sand and there was be lots of bugs in the evening. No hot water in the showers. But the sites are amazing, especially in the dunes and the secluded beach access is to die for!

We brought our folding kayaks and explored the marsh grass near the boat launch during low tide. Beautiful sunset.

Site 87 (in 2022) is a smallish site between 3 other sites. The site behind has to walk thru the fire ring area to access the restroom and parking. I have camped at Assateague for 26 years. This time it was very pleasant for the most part. As the first evening wore on there was nice music playing in the campground, then someone playing and singing, a whippoorwill could be heard, waves crashing on the beach, crickets singing in the brush. It was great until late at night when someone with a NOS engine began (it sounded like) driving up the oceanside access and racing down Bayberry, undoubtedly exceeding the 25mph speed limit with his screaming engine. Who does that?! That and the lack of water at the pump and in the showers kinda soured the experience for me this time, even though I'm not a fan of summer camping here and all the bugs, weather, and shenanigans you have to tolerate as a summer visitor. It's the off-season for me from now on.

No skeeters in July? Maybe oceanside is the way to go

I would suggest lots of bug spray with deet a must, stay at Bayside for larger, more convenient campsites that offer more relaxing water activities, go to the beach to cool off as water temp, wind, will help accomplish that, dont you dare keep tent open on beach dunes to cool off or chiggers will mess up your world and fo god sakes lock up your food, you think all the earnings about horses are put there for fun?! Otherwise Assateague Island is a wonderful place for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife and several activities.
