had a great experience - only one problem. There was what likely turned out to be a "squatter" couple in my reserved site #72 when I arrived at 6:45 PM the night of my reservation. They claimed they had reserved site 74 and that they did not think anyone was using 72 but I belive the office had no record of their reservation in 74. I stayed in 74 that night to avoid making them leave and causing problems They left the next morning before 10 AM and before the rangers could look into it (I had gone to ocean city that morning for supplies).one of the bathrooms near site 72 seemed to be out of order

Excellent bird watching. Walk-in campsites were very quiet during weekdays in May.

We loved camping here! We picked a great time of year in mid/late March before the bugs are out. I loved the site we picked because it was nestled into a private spot away from the main beach. The horses were beautiful, but be warned that they WILL come into your campsite and eat all of your food, including from directly off of the fire. Our camp neighbors did not fare well in that regard. The wind at night was brutal and beat against the tent all night, but thats par for the course for the beautiful island. 10/10 cant wait to go back

The only downside is how popular the sites are. We spent two nights and had to move campsites, but didn't mind. The hosts were wonderful, the park is so well cared for, and our fellow campers were so nice and cordial. We also had incredible weather, but cant credit NPS for that :) and we watched a momma killdeer hatch 3 new babies overnight. what an amazing thing to witness (respectfully from a distance). We try to get to Assateague every year, but it is getting challenging.

The three trails we went on were beautiful. A local member of the Assateague Alliance happened to be on the forest trail and we learned so much from her! Everyone was friendly and the wildlife was stunning.
