The weather was great. Saw a bunch of horses. Parked on the road and camped on the beach. Had a nice fire in the fire ring. Went swimming in the ocean. I love coming here. We do it three or four times a year. I tell people about it all the time.

I l am an avid camper and love the outdoors, I go camping around once a month, sometime more. When I tell you this campground was borderline hell, I mean it. We camped before the dunes, in the brush. The biting flies and mosquitoes were so bad I was convinced I was being punished for sins in a past life. They were immune to citronella, bug spray, deet, nothing worked. My guess is that camping spots on the dunes had less bugs, but the downside to th dune locations was no wind shelter. We saw an entire family of 5+ struggling to keep a tent up in the wind for hours, they eventually gave up and only used one tent. Dont get me started about the horses. I love them; they were beautiful. When they say do not keep food out this doesnt just mean when youre not eating, it means literally be on guard ALWAYS. We were actively eating smores around 11pm at our campsite (so obviously all the smores ingredients were out and in use) and a whole GAGGLE of horses pulled up on us and tried to steal our marshmallows. There was 5 and they came in FAST. I was able to defend our smores and get all the food away from the horses, so in protest they hung out around our tent for two hours. After we finally reclaimed our campsite and went to bed, I hear the most terrible gremlin noises next to my head outside the tent. I hear the unknown gremlin(s) somehow pull out my toiletries from the locked table and drag them through the grass. I investigate, and there are two raccoons smug as can be with my toothpaste. Even the items in your locked table are not safe !!Im not saying this place is terrible, Im just saying its not for the faint of heart. Your limits and sanity will be tested. A gang of horses WILL pull up on you in the middle of the night. You WILL be bit through the thickest clothing and strongest bug spray. You have been warned.

The beach is really nice at Assateague and was warm enough to swim in in mid-October. The stars were brilliant at night too. The under-table horse-proof storage is a nice feature. Just be warned that raccoons can reach through the slats and make off with food. They can even open a bin that's in the under-table storage so do as recommended and put a strap around your bins and coolers that you store in there. (We learned the hard way.) The raccoons also seem to like footwear. They dragged off my son's sandals twice, ate through the strap on my daughter's crocs, and delivered a flip-flop to us from another site. Anyway, great trip.

This was our third time to Assateague and the beach is a beautiful place to spend time. This site however, as the last reviewer said, had more mosquitoes than we have ever encountered at the campsites. It was enough to make the experience quite unpleasant and required immediate application of bug spray head to toe every time you left the tent or returned from the beach. Maybe we got unlucky (but it had been quite dry), but we'll avoid this site in the future.

We go to Assateague every year (twice a year!) and really enjoy it. There are always mosquitos at the park, and we know how to manage them accordingly. However, this year our campsite was so overrun with mosquitos we could not even be at the site. I'm talking hundreds, if not thousands. Even fully clothed head to toe in multiple layers with DEET spray on I still had about 3 dozen bites after one night. We spent our entire time there on the beach. Going back to the site only to grab food, wood, or to dash into our tents for the night. (And yes, the tents were also full of mosquitos) We've never left early in almost 10 years of visiting this park, but we left a night early because we were so miserable. I think there was standing water under our picnic table. I won't be dissuaded from going in the future, but definitely stay away from any sites in the 70s as they are mosquito heaven and truly unlivable. ESPECIALLY site 71.

Really beautiful campground, beach, and place to be for the night!! Can't wait to come back! Definitely bring bug spray (for bugs at night at campsite, and for sand gnats on the beach at any time).

They warn you about the horses, but you also need to be aware of the raccoons. They know that good stuff gets stored in the cabinets under the tables and they'll reach between the boards and try to snag some of it. We heard our pot lids banging around in there in the middle of the night. They'll sneak onto your picnic table when your back is turned. I caught one practically getting ready to climb up my leg while I was seated near the fire pit.The horses visited our campsite a couple of times also. Keep food items locked up or in containers/bags that can quickly be locked up.It was rainy and fairly windy part of our trip here. I was glad to have chosen a site behind the done rather than on the dune itself, although the people in sites on the dune seemed to be having a good time of it.In addition to walking on the beach and along the park trails we enjoyed part of a day in Ocean City and a side trip to Berlin, where we found a nice downtown with restaurants and antique shops.

We had a wonderful experience at the walk-in beach side sites! The latrines and showers were very clean, water spigot was very convenient to use. We stayed on the grassy side nearer to the parking lot and it was easy to pull a wagon to and from the car to load and unload. The rangers were warm and inviting, except to the people breaking the rules and trying to feed the wild horses! I loved camping here!

Beautiful beach and location but the mosquitoes were brutal when we went (late July), especially in the evening. We ended up retreating to our tent and were due to stay two nights but only managed one. First time this happened to us after many camping trips this summer. That said, some people around us were sitting outside around campfires, so your mileage may vary! If you do go in July/August, make sure to have lots of high % DEET spray for body and clothes and you're generally tolerant of getting bitten. Also it's probably better if you can get a site on the sand, ours was on the grass by lots of bushes.
