Thanks to the NPS for all that they do, despite the shutdown the campgrounds and facilities were open and clean. You all are awesome, dont let anyone else try to tell you otherwise!!

My husband & I camped at a walk in site. We loved the location of the camp. Great view of ocean. Ponies came right thru camp our last morning there. We really enjoyed that. I am artist so looking forward to painting from photos we took. We were celebrating our 51st anniversary. You do need to be in decent shape to walk in supplies tent etc. They do have drive up sites as well there. Loved the experience of camping on Assateague Island. Be prepared for cold showers. Lol

Beach camping here never disappoints! The walk-in ocean side sites are great. Plenty of room and the topography can change from visit to visit. Ocean, beach, wild ponies, its a great experience. Come prepared! The wind can kick up and you need sand stakes for your tent and youre likely to get a visit from the ponies wandering around hoping for snacks. Nice facilities too considering its camping. I highly recommend!

This year, I calculated this was either my fortieth or forty first year going to Assateague. I can't remember if, the first time I went, I was eighteen or nineteen, in '81 or '82. Being from Canada and so, having to drive twelve hours to get there, I always stay the maximum allotted time of two weeks. Now, I haven't been every year but it remains a unique place for me. The beauty of nature and the calm! There is nothing quite like going to bed at night and falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. Thank you to all of you of the US National Park Service for keeping this oasis so pristine and accessible.

Assateague Island is my favorite destination. The only downside is that I am getting older and having a hard time trekking into the walk in sites with all my gear. It would be nice to have some rustic cabin option on the ocean side.

We liked the layout and proximity/privacy to the beach, however there was very little relief/shade from the sun and the bugs (horseflies) were really bad. The facilities were in good shape but given the summer heat better bathroom facilities (showers and sinks) could help keep hygiene better in the park.
