We had a beautiful weekend at Assateague. We walk-on camped on the beach, walked small trails around the island and double kayaked. The most awesome part was seeing the wild horses who greeted us with the sunrise on the beach. A must see for folks who love camping and outdoor vacations. Bring a lantern though because it is super dark at night. And book your spot early because they fill up fast.

Site: 101, Tent, 5/26/22 to 5/27/22Our ratings this trip: The park, overall: 5This site, this trip: 4Bugs: 2 (1 = no bugs, 5 = can't leave the screen house)Star viewing: 5 ( 1 = being view obstructed by trees, 5 = can see everything) Birds watching: 3 (1 = low, 5 = lots)Horses: 2 (0 = none, 5 = disrupts visit)Noise/crowds: 1 (1 = quiet, 3 = loud) Privacy: 5 (1 = None, 5 = Very)Review:I really like this site. It is sheltered from the wind as much as possible on the beach. You do have an option for putting the tent in a more exposed location for a view of the ocean. It is private, at the center of the site, you can only be seen by one other site. Bugs, were minimal but we did use Termacell, which works really well. There were horses but not too many. The reason i am are giving it only 3 stars is the walk (in sand) from the car to the site and that the restrooms are further than I like. Younger or fit people may not mind it. The site is a bit of a walk from where the boardwalk ends and it's up hill. We may use this site in the future. If we do, were are going minimal... small cooler, light tent, only bedding that is necessary; basically the least amount of gear we can.

I love everything about this place. Unfortunately we had a negative experience when checking in at the ranger station on Sunday, March 20th at @ 12 noon. I view the position of Ranger as a public relation position. I went in to the building in a wonderful mood and the female ranger behind the counter made sure I knew she did not like her job. I am a nurse, and there are many studies that show that the best way to educate our patients or the public is one on one contact. What a better time to remind me regarding not feeding the horses, or not bringing wood from other state than when I check in. No one was on line. She grunted for me to show her my senior card, and when I got off line she quickly continued a conversation with her colleague that I must have interrupted.Later in the day when we were coming back from Berlin, I pulled up and forgot that she needed my information again (license and Senior Forever pass). I quickly retrieved the cards, and she told me I handed them to her in the wrong direction. Never in my life have I been told to provide ID cards in the right direction. It was the same ranger. She needs to be reminded that she is the front line to the public, and if she doesn't like client service, their are many people that would want her job!!

My walk-in tent site in the dunes overlooked the ocean and the sites around me had considerate campers. The weather was lovely and the amenities were what I expected from the park.

We picked a spot that was surrounded by bushes/grasses so it blocked off the wind. It was October 14-16 and it was 74 degrees during the day and only got down to 55 degrees F at night. We brought so many layers of clothing, but then ended up sweating at night because it wasn't as cold as we thought it would be. There weren't any mosquitoes at our campsite. Definitely bring your own wood. The campsites have firepits with a grill attached to it. I recommend a brush to brush off any sand so your food isn't sandy... although that might be hard to avoid since it was quite windy. The stars at night were spectacular. Since it wasn't that cold, I regretted not bringing sandals. At night the sand was cold though, so I recommend bringing socks. Overall, the trip was amazing! We were lucky to see some horses on the roads and on a smaller beach. It's also worth it to go on the little trails they have, like the Marshes Trail, super cool!
