We showed up and couldn't go in the water or the beach due to a medical spill. I understand this is out of the parks control, but an email warning us about this is the least they could do so we could adjust our plans... we drove far to come here.

It was magical. I swam with the dophins as the sun was rising and wild ponies were behind me.

We love it at Assateague. We love that the wildlife is so well respected and preserved. We will keep coming back with our family king into the future!

Love the ocean, the campsite, the horses.

Great place to camp. Staff is super friendly and helpful. I couldn't make it to the site before the office closed, but I was able to just go to my site and check in the next morning. A group of horses spent an hour or two in our campsite one morning eating some grass and then taking a nap! I guess we gave off good vibes.

I had a great visit as usual.

Unfortunately this time the horses snuck up behind me as I was cooking dinner on the fire.
Keeping my goods secure & out of their reach has always been paramount for me but this time there was nothing I could do.

I walked from the table to the fire & I hadn't even bent down to put my pot on when I heard a horse behind me.
Within seconds there were several of his buddies & I had to keep away until they had finished rummaging through all my stuff. It was a bit scary but I can't be upset. It's their home after all. I just hope nothing they took/ate made any of them sick.

I'm not sure if we've just been lucky in the past while cooking after dark but I've always had a friend or two with me. This time I was camping alone.

If you have any other tips to avoid this in the future, please let me know. Finding a balance between enjoying food after a long day & not having the horses raid my campsite is ideal. Learning how to avoid that situation or deter the horses at night would be greatly appreciated!
Other than only cooking during the day of course:)

Great experience, lovely location, perfect campsite. The horse mafia thugs showed up only one evening/night. Those who were prepared were spared. We saw others suffer loss. Fascinating animals. Grateful they share their island home with us.
We love the undeveloped beach and surf. I saw a school of dolphins one morning. We enjoyed the bay as well, since the mosquitoes were largely absent. We are eager to return!

Camping here was great. Just make sure you prepare for possible high wind . Even in mid March, this place is beautiful. Be sure to check out the short trails while camping here.
