The staff were great and really helpful but unfortunately the place isn't the best kept. I understand the horses are wild and will defecate wherever they want but when a huge pile of horse feces is laying in a high traffic path to camp sites and outhouses/showers, it's not a good look. The showers could use an update. The handle you pull to get water flowing was all jacked up. I fixed the one I used while showering. Still, we had a good time and again the staff were extremely nice and helpful.

Walk-in camp site #062 is a beautiful spot, somewhat out of the wind, with a most engaging resident racoon, who lives there full time and exacts food tariffs on all visitors.

Love camping here. Beautiful beach, horses and lots of other great wildlife. And the bathrooms are very clean. Looking forward to our next camping trip at Assateague.

I've been camping at Assateague National Shore every year for the past 40 or so; it just gets better.

Very confusing where to check in no signs also signs poorly marked for the sites. No garbage cans for trash. Have to leave island for ice and fire wood.

Most beautiful place to camp on the east coast. Wake up to an amazing sunrise and fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing onto the beach. The island does have wild horses as well as raccoon, deer and other wild life so proper food storage is key at all times so we don’t hurt the wildlife who actually live here. They made all of this really easy with the storage compartments under the picnic table provided or just as easy keep everything in your car. I’ve never had a problem and having the wildlife makes it that much more of a better experience. Definitely in the summer months bring bug spray and a canopy for some shade from the sun as well as very long tent stakes due to it being windy at times. ocean city is a quick drive and has something for anyone to enjoy. You won’t regret taking a trip to assateague island national seashore, round up the family and friends and go make some memories you won’t forget on Maryland’s eastern shore.

We have camped "Oceanside" several times. This was our first "Bayside" camping trip. The mosquitoes were...........thriving to say the least. We even ended our trip a day early because we couldn't get beyond the bloodsuckers (we're two adults and one dog.) I cannot imagine how bad this experience could have been if we had kids with us. Even with a campfire, citronella candles, heavy deet.... these things persevered. Though there were mosquitoes on the "Oceanside" campgrounds, they'll never compare to what we experienced in just 10 hours whilst camping "Bayside" ---take heed!

Beautiful beach and clean facilities! We loved our visit. The only downside was the sand at just our camp site (#62) was sand which appeared to have had a TON of charcoal mixed into it. The sand was very dark and was staining the kids' feet and hands...So that made me uneasy. We will be back - just a different site!

Beautiful as always. This campsite is larger than the others. Semi private. Surrounded by trees and bushes. Watch out for raccoons day and night. Do not leave food out. The only thing we didn’t like about this campsite was the dirty sand that most likely comes from the ashes of the firepit

I stayed at spot 62. It's back off the beach and secluded but its sheltered from the the wind a bit. The facilities are basic. Fire pit with grill and picnic table. The table does have a space under it to store food that can be closed off from the horses. Not listed on the site but they do have cold showers. It was a really good time. It was the first family camping trip. Got some nice shots of the Milky Way as well.

Great time!

Having to keep our food in the car (as advised by the ranger) while staying in a walk in site as a family of four was a bit difficult. It was constant schlepping of stuff back and forth. But the site was nice, the area is beautiful. The bathrooms were very clean! The beach is stunning and the trails were lovely. Next time we will bring our bikes!

I love coming to this park! I camp every year there and always have a wonderful and relaxing time. I love seeing the ponies and other wildlife. My favorite thing is being able to have fires on the beach at night, it is one of the best features of this park!

Campsite was clean, well-kept and as described on the website (no hot water, no electricity, on beach sand behind the dunes, short walk from car parking/water/showers/restrooms). We tent camped on the beach side in August, and the lack of shade made for some very hot afternoons -- be prepared for summer weather (this means thunderstorms, too!). Between riding the waves on the beach side, fishing / crabbing on the sound, and an occasional mid-afternoon ranger program to escape the sun and heat, my boys were busy all day, every day! We did not experience bad horseflys or mosquitos during our stay, thankfully; but I also had pre-sprayed our tents with a mosquito deterrent. We'll be back again this year, and I'll certainly take this precaution again! The sites are somewhat close together, nonetheless, our experience was that the campers (whether a young family or a group of 20-somethings) were all very considerate of each other - going out of their way to respect each others personal space (walking around, not through, loosely defined campsites), aural space (noise was really kept low), and visual space (aka, pretending you don't see each other while sipping sunrise coffee in your pjs). The park gave campers on sites without a dedicated 'horsebox' straps to secure camp totes, otherwise horses can get at camper's food. Campers are advised to keep all food and supplies in secure plastic totes, or similar containers. Bags strewn about a table under a screen tent will not work at Assateague! Further, we were encouraged *not* to keep our cooler at the camp site in order to ensure horses were not tempted; this was a surprise and somewhat inconvenient. The camp stores had limited supplies and kept rather restricted hours, so campers should plan carefully and shop on the mainland for food and essentials. Horses were everywhere when was visited, so no problems seeing them all over the island and campground.
