The restrooms were really bad. There was no flush and there were all mosquitoes in the restrooms. We all got sick after coming from the camping at the island. I sincerely request to change this and have actual restrooms.

Easy to check in. We stayed on Lot 60 in the Oceanside. Long walk from the car down a boardwalk and up a dune so be prepared- recommend a cart with wheels if you can have one. Bring as much firewood as you can but you can buy more about 10 minutes away. This is a really nice size lot. Not too far from bathrooms and showers. Keep in mind no showere early in the season (before Memorial Day). Will come again (and hope for warmer weather!). Dont go in April! We rented the lot for two nights and went home after the first day due to the cold. Want to come back in warmer weather. Good luck!

We camped at Oceanside site 060 and 065 from 8/29 to 9/1. I highly recommend booking open beach sites like these rather than the more secluded sites if you dont care about sharing spaces with neighbors. There are more private sites surrounded by brushes, but you will have more mosquitoes and flies during this time of the year. I recommend low profile tents and 8+ inch, large surface area stakes for windy days (I used 12 inch Coghlans plastic stakes). We experienced a thunderstorm, and all 5 walk-in tents around us collapsed. Make sure to keep all food in the storage space under the picnic table at each site when not needed because the horses will try to raid your site for food. The mosquitoes start to swarm about 1.5 hours before sunset and dissipate about 1.5 hours after sunrise. Fishing is allowed on both Oceanside and Bayside, and you will need a MD or VA tidal/coastal/saltwater license or a Potomac River license. Make sure to register as a saltwater angler if you intend to fish across state lines; i.e., register as a VA saltwater angler if you hold MD license and vice versa, for free. The rangers are good at their jobs.

My very first time here! Love love love it! Got to see a group of horses strolling the beach one morning. Stayed 2 nights at site 60. This is a good site for young folk or anyone physically fit. You have to go up a hill of sand to get to your plot. That was a serious workout. The view was amazing tho. Bathroom is not that close. Take a bucket if you have to go at night. Already checking for open reservations to come back with my kids. Oh if you have Boost Mobile trash that phone get Verizon. Boost Mobile service was terrible here.

Assateague is such a beautiful and natural area, our camp site looked right out on the ocean. The rangers were very helpful and informative and gave my two young children junior ranger books that had fun activities for them to do while we were there. Lovely experience, we’ll be back!

I had the absolute BEST times at Assateague this summer. I went three times and have camped in both the Bay Side and Ocean Side. I would say the Bay Side is your best bet if you want to see the horses as they tend to make their rounds there for the grass. The Ocean side, however, is gorgeous and probably the only place on the east coast you're allowed to do so! It's pristine beaches, marvelous wild life and walkability will make you fall in love. Keep it clean and respect those animals !

Amazing place - one of a kind. Bring a sun tent for the beach in the summer. Be sure to have bug spray. And enjoy!

Love the beach. Walk up sites are a considerable amount of work, but well worth the effort.
