The sites didn't feel too close together. The bathrooms were clean. I mostly enjoyed hearing the coyotes as the sun went down. It was a serene spot in the tent only area.

This was our second visit to Elk Mountain Campground. We love the prairie/Black Hills landscape with all the animals one may see there. I find the landscape beautiful, peaceful, and easy-on-the-eyes. During this visit we went on the Natural Entrance cave tour where we learned a great deal about Wind Cave from the knowledgeable, personable, and enthusiastic ranger leading the tour. As a senior citizen with less than perfect eyesight, I did not find the steps on this tour difficult but was somewhat inhibited by navigating in a dimly lit cave, often with narrow passageways. During our visit, the water to restrooms and pumps went out (we later learned that the float on the water tank had stuck and thus the tank had been drained). The camp host and staff dealt with the problem as soon as they were notified. Drinking water was back within a short time, but the restrooms remained locked for most of the remainder of the day while the engineers were waiting for the tank to refill. Fortunately there were clean privies available. We like Wind Cave NP so I'm sure we'll return to Elk Mountain Campground if we're in the area in the future. Although not all campsites are level, ours had a level tent pad and was reasonably close to drinking water and toilets. The campground host was pleasant and helpful.
