Magical. Love the big trees, ancient forest, lushness, wild river, deep swimming hole, belted kingfishers flying by and the serenity of this place. I recommend not just the short loop trail to the falls but to also hike downriver or upriver on the Santiam Wagon Trail. Spectacular. Let's make sure these forests STAND and protect them from logging.

We love this campground, everything about it is absolutely amazing except the fact that half the reserved sites (the best ones along the river most notably) sit empty because people who reserved them a while back, like 6 months in advance, don't show up and don't care to cancel. This particular place, managed by Linn county, is worse than most Forest Service campgrounds because the managers honor the reservations of people who don't show up until the very end.

Amazing campground with great water access at almost every site. Waterfall hike (short), cliffs to jump off into a deep pool, and gorgeous clear (very cold) water!

Great set of camp sites. Many right against the South Santiam River, with good tree shade and well groomed. Water pumps, covered garbage cans and clean vault toilets. No showers or other plumbing.

There are a few cons, however: Water from the pump is a bit dirty looking, so I ended up using my Katadyn water filter on it, which was great. There is a steep loose dirt and gravel hill up to campsites 8-17, difficult to get up with 2-wheel drive car, and impossible on a motorcycle. Do not attempt this on a motorcycle! Book one of the first 7 camp sites instead. The road down from Highway 20 is a bit steep and gravel as well, so be careful.

There is no camp host at site 1, and there is no firewood to buy, so you'll have to buy it on the road and bring it in.

No camp host. Vault toilets were in fair condition, odor was noted. Sites along the river are wonderful. Several of these sites had reserved tags on them but were not occupied, and never were while we were there. Frustrating, because we wanted to stay a second night. Great hikes from this campground.

Incredible beauty surrounded us. Site #14 had a 600-year-old Douglas -fir in the middle of our camp. And, the beautiful South Santiam offered us a swimming hole right off our campsite.
