Contrary to the name, this is not a sand pit! The loop road and campsites are gravel with a primitive feel. Sites had tables and fire pits, some sites did have power. Not really tent friendly, definitely big rig friendly. There are large dumpsters near the restrooms. Camp host was on duty.
The $35 fee is high for a dry site, but the park does charge day use fees of $15/20 for residents and are $20/25 for nonresidents. Boy was it busy on Sunday with day users!
This campground was very busy in mid April, Sunday through Wednesday. There are 5 group sites and the remainder of the sites are pull throughs, mostly HUGE. (At one time these huge pull throughs were double sites, most are now single sites.) The campground was pretty quiet considering how many rigs were there due to the full group sites. There is highway noise but it does quiet down at night.
The other campgrounds in this park (Lakeside and Westside) were also busy with OHV enthusiasts, but in seemed quieter and less dusty since they are paved campgrounds with no group area.
Definitely caters to the off roaders. You are able to ride your OHV from the campground to the OHV area through a tunnel to the other side of the highway. I think of my non OHV friends, they would not like it here!
Restrooms were very nice, clean and stocked. One building had 4 private restrooms and one building had 4 private restrooms with free showers. Attached to the building are outdoor sinks and drinking fountains.
Dump station is available near the entrance, free to registered campers.
