We kayaked to the cabin taking 2 days to get there, sticking to the shoreline and exploring areas along the way. We paddled a total of 18 miles to get there, about 6 hours in a tandem kayak, it was my wife's first time sea kayaking. Everything was great until we got to Inner Point, from there to Fred's creek the waves got big and my wife got pretty scared. There was a big storm that was rolling in and we made it to the cabin just in time. For the next 2 days it dumped rain on us. There was firewood left in the cabin and plenty more in the wood shed.
We were planning on hiking Mt Edgecumb but the rain never let up. So we stayed in the cabin and listened to audio books and enjoyed each other's company. There are no pads/mattresses in the cabin just wooden platforms. We had our backpacking gear so it was just fine. The only thing that would have made it more enjoyable would be a couple nice chairs to relax by the fire.
Lots of pink salmon running up the river, no signs of bears. Saw one deer, and lots of seals and sea otters. We filtered water from Fred's Creek, this seemed to clog up the filter pretty quickly and all the water we found around Sitka had a copper color to it even after filtering.
Loved our stay and would definitely be back.
If you would like to cross the creek, hip waders are recommended, makes it a lot easier!
Enjoyed our stay so much. Very peaceful and plenty of places to hike and walk along the beaches!
ENJOY!
