Sardine lake is one of those pristine mountain lakes that is postcard perfect. It's a small boat electric trolling motor fishing and kayaking only lake. No swimming is allowed as it's designated for fishing only by the county. There is however a nice pond next door within walking distance where you can swim or fish (Sand Pond). There are also numerous other nearby lakes where fishing and swimming is allowed. Some of the camp spots are nice but most don't have any distance between them and thus you'd better like your neighbors. I was camped in spot 6 and it was right next door to the adjoining spots. I'm more used to spots that have a little more distance between them but luckily I had a great neighbor and we got along really well. Would I go back? Perhaps if I had a better spot. Not much of a lake fisherman so it would only be good for a few days for me. One of the complaints I have with the Recreation.gov website is the picture of the camp spots are horrible! If they only updated the pictures to give you a better idea of how it's laid out you could make better choices.

Our first time camping at Sardine Lake after years of trying to camp without reservations in the Lakes Basin. The Sierra Buttes are dramatic, setting a granite mass above Upper Sardine Lake which is reached by a short hike or a genuine 4-wheel drive only road. The Sardine Lake resort dominates the east shore of the lake with cabins and boat rentals (both a bit pricey but plenty of people were in cabins and boats). The lake is a "pristine fishing lake" which means no swimming; swimmers go to Sand Pond below the lake or Upper Sardine Lake. Arriving on a Sunday afternoon, Sand Pond was packed with swimmers and picnickers, several of whom appeared to be day users rather than campers. This seemed odd as there are no towns nearby. I saw several large trout in Sand Pond so fishing there could be very good if you get there before the swimmers.

Nice scenic environment. Have been coming here (only occasionally in recent years) since 1960. The restrooms were clean and well-stocked and there are conveniences close by. It no longer has the wilderness feel it had in the 1960s but still enjoyable.

We have been here for the last four years in a row! Great place. Quiet! We bring our trailer and meet our grandkids. before we got our trailer we camped at Gold lake each year for over 30 years and visited Jardine for a couple of days each time with its sand pond for swimming and it's lake for fishing. And don't for get about the lodge at Sardine for dinner and drinks.
