When we got there, we knew the freeway noise would be a constant. It did die down, as the night grew later, but the trains.....damn! At one point, the noise was so loud, we were having to yell at each other, over the fire, just to hear each other. It was insane, and it was all night! There must have been 5-6 trains go by from 9pm to 3am.
If it were not for the noise, I’d be back in a heartbeat!
Upon arrival camp host nowhere to be found. Took me a while to find him.
Two main issues with our specific site were that: 1. Our site had NO tent pad. Super rocky hill behind picnic table. Had to use the tent on the parking space and couldn't stake it down.
2. Previous campers left tons of garbage behind and our fire ring was already full.
Overall, the camp host didn't seem to be doing his job. He did not check people in and out. He did no maintenance of the bathrooms. He did not empty fire rings. He did not check sites after people left before new arrivals. He did not enforce any rules. When I told him about our specific issues he promised to have the site leveled the next day and never did.
Yes, there is freeway noise from the campground. It gets loud at times and we couldn't hear one another. Didn't bother us while we slept, though. Definitely a beautiful area but doesn't quite give you the wilderness immersion vibe.
Some sites are far better than others but none are very private. Our site was right up against another with nothing separating us.
This campsite doesn't have a trail directly connected. There is a popular hike a 5 minute drive away at the Loch Leven Lake. This is a very steep, rocky hike. It's hot and sunny and there were only 2 trail markers on our 7 mile hike. We got lost multiple times because of this. Find a good map before you go. Not a beginner hike.
River can be accessed behind campground if you don't mind trampling through some shrubs. But it's very cold! Like ice water. Didn't see anyone swim there.
Campground provides good drinking water, vault toilets, nice bear vaults, and concrete picnic tables.
We made the best of our weekend and still had a good time. This camp site is best suited to rv's and those camping along the way to another destination.
