This is, by far, the nicest National Forest campsite we have ever seen. Sites are perfectly graveled and level. This site had water hookup which included a separate water spigot for drinking/washing...brilliant! Bathrooms were very clean. Campsite host was awesome. Quiet, gorgeous, location on the river.

The campsite is really a nice site and Tom, the camp host, was really nice. We had electric and water most nights, but the electric/water sites are limited and we had to switch to a non-electric/water site for some nights because of the way reservations work on Recreation.Gov. The biggest drawback for us was that there isn't a dump station in the campsite for campers. There is for the host, but not campers. The closest dump station was in Cody and that meant a 2 hour round trip, which pretty much takes up half a morning, especially if you also have to move a site. Apparently this is the same for all campsites outside of the Yellowstone border. The sites inside Yellowstone had dump stations. Because of this, we will try to book inside the park next time. Not having a dump station anywhere close was a huge issue for us as we stayed for over a week. If you are staying a short time, it may not be for you.

We camped at the sites that were closest to the river. Its a beautiful campground and sunsets are stunning! Sites seem pretty well spaced out. Enjoyed coffee in the morning with the view and sunsets with a fire staring at the view. Really had no issues with bugs and the camp host was helpful.

Very quiet due to few campers - YNP was closed from the flooding. But, it was nice to camp without a crowd around us.

Rex Hale hands down is a great spot. The pads are well maintained, I have stayed her twice (Aug 2021 & May 2022). The location being just 18 miles from the east entrance is great, not too close to the road at least I didnt feel close, barely hear road noise, great view, quiet camp ground, everyone is respectful and the bonusno cell service at all, so work cant get ahold of ya. Both visits we were tent camping, so definitely were bear aware, we didnt have water on our pad due to outage but that didnt matter we brought what we needed so wasnt a factor at all. Weather was what we expected, that little snow storm we got the day we arrived was a hoot, but the tent we have had a wood burning stove so we were nice and comfy inside (60 F) while it was 33 F outside. Saw some wildlife (No grizzlies) but know they are in the area (traveling the river bank) so be bear aware and dont cook near your sleeping area if you are a tent camper.

Rex Hale is a gem, you can't beat the remoteness & closeness to Yellowstone National Park. Forest Service personnel maintain this campground impeccably, the camp hosts are a wealth of information, they kind and really made my wife and I feel welcome. We were there August 24th-27th saw some decent grizzly bear tracks along the river, so you know they are in the area. Rex Hale was the closets campground to Yellowstone were you could still tent camp, camp grounds closer required hard-side campers due to bear activity. So finding the grizzly bear tracks along the river just about 200 yards from were our tent was, made you really double the effort of following the rules for tent camping in grizzly bear country. Rex Hale will be a return campground for us.

When we arrived at the campground the host informed me that the water was not useable. We traveled 10 hours empty expecting to be able to fill our tank up for the rest of our trip. That was really the only disappointment we had here. Beautiful campground and very quiet. The River running through is very peaceful. Would try here again if we came back but would call ahead to check water status.

The Campground was neat and well kept. The hosts were very friendly and willing to give us some information about the area and ensured we were taking precautions for the wildlife. Everything from reserving the site to checking in to using the facilities, it was all a breeze.
