Recent wild fires have devastated the entire area, and although the Camp Nelson/Quaking Aspen areas escaped most of the burn, the damage caused means that pretty much every trail in the area is currently closed to hiking. So if you're a hiker like me, you're gonna be pretty disappointed.
Back to the campground itself, I would've been content to just relax at my campsite and just nap and vibe all day, but for the insects. Specifically one that looks like a bee, though I'm pretty sure it's not since I swatted countless numbers of them and never got a retaliatory sting in return. But they must've had a hive nearby because every time I opened any food of any sort they'd swarm. No matter how much I tried to shoo them off or smack them away, they just didn't care about me. Even to the point where they were willing to land in and fry to death in my hot pans. And even when I wasn't messing with food, there was a constant rotation of them stopping by to try landing on my face or crawling up my sleeves or pants. Bug spray, citronella candles, camp fires, not even my thermacell could keep them away.
For the next few years at least, I can't recommend this campsite for day hikers.
