I love this campsite. The host, Tim, is super nice. The only gripe I had was he informed me a CAMPFIRE PERMIT is needed which was pretty annoying since I had to drive somewhere to get WiFi - take the test (its free) and get my permit. It would be very useful to have that posted somewhere in the booking instructions so we get it BEFORE getting there. Other than that it was great.

Site 22 was really nice! Place was in a great area. Nice hikes nearby. Dome rock was nice to visit. Staff onsite was very friendly and helpful. Restrooms kept very clean and trash pickups were frequent. Site overall was very well maintained. I would definitely come back here.

It feels a little blasé to rate campgrounds, but in this case it may be a good idea. Quaking Aspens campground is a beautiful site with lots of trees and a pretty meadow right next door that makes for some great gazing in the morning sun. Pit toilets are about what you'd expect but there are several potable water spigots around, and even some fancy yurts if you feel like spending a little more money for something that feels a little more sheltered than a tent. Something important to note though is that there are no bear boxes on site. The camp host said they rarely get bears in the area, so you should be okay as long as you pack your food back into your car at night. Just keep in mind that technically you are in bear country, so you run the associated risks if your food isn't secure.
Recent wild fires have devastated the entire area, and although the Camp Nelson/Quaking Aspen areas escaped most of the burn, the damage caused means that pretty much every trail in the area is currently closed to hiking. So if you're a hiker like me, you're gonna be pretty disappointed.
Back to the campground itself, I would've been content to just relax at my campsite and just nap and vibe all day, but for the insects. Specifically one that looks like a bee, though I'm pretty sure it's not since I swatted countless numbers of them and never got a retaliatory sting in return. But they must've had a hive nearby because every time I opened any food of any sort they'd swarm. No matter how much I tried to shoo them off or smack them away, they just didn't care about me. Even to the point where they were willing to land in and fry to death in my hot pans. And even when I wasn't messing with food, there was a constant rotation of them stopping by to try landing on my face or crawling up my sleeves or pants. Bug spray, citronella candles, camp fires, not even my thermacell could keep them away.
For the next few years at least, I can't recommend this campsite for day hikers.

Vaulted toilets are what they are, and no showers. But that also makes for more serious and less rowdy campers, so YAY!
