Nice campground, great camp site (right on the river). You should know that it is really hot there for months. And there's no fires allowed for months.

Sadly , our cooler got stolen by someone at first day of camping , no shade, on summer time (heat wave attack) make sure your spot need shade,,, 3 stars for toilets cleanness , 2 stars for clean fire pit cleanness (still have some old stuff left)and the grill got broken without fixing,, 5 stars for location (next to the Kern river ) ..

So... this campground is old, small and out of cell phone range. That’s not what we needed on that particular night. Our 1/2 ton truck and 25’ travel trailer barely fit through the park. Our site would have required us to unhitch (in fairness, I probably should have known that from research in advance... my bad). We moved down the road to a commercial campground and for us, that was a better fit for one night.

That said, if you are tent camping or don’t need connection to the outside world or like the more remote location, and want to be farther upstream, this could be your five star campground... it just wasn’t for us on that night.

We enjoyed our stay at Headquarters. Spent 2 nights during Thanksgiving weekend with our pups and a camper van. Campsite #15 was great, right on the river near a short trail that led you down to the waters edge. Fortunately it wasnt too crowded so we didnt experience anyone walking through our site to access the trail, though I could see it being potentially annoying during the spring or summer months. Neighboring campers were very polite, I was also glad to see a few that wore masks. Unfortunately we did notice that was a bit of trash left over from previous guests, very frustrating seeing that there was a very large container at the entrance for everyone to offload their garbage. Bathroom was very clean, well stocked, and having access to water from the spigots was also helpful. We were relieved to find out that we could have campfires (according to the fs.usda.gov site it looked like there were restrictions in place), so on the second night we picked up some wood just up the road. Cell service was pretty much zero for us (T-Mobile), but being off grid was actually pretty nice. We would definitely return to Headquarters, though wed like try out other sites and maybe a yurt or two.

Camp host drives around and checks on everyone constantly. If this is your thing then you will like this place. Not for us.
