Stanley Lake sits at 6,500 feet. McGowan Peak, which towers over the lake, is at nearly 10,000 feet. The combination provide one of the most iconic views of the Sawtooths.
Campsite 9, where we stayed, is located 50 feet from the water. There was plenty of room because us and our only neighbor and a day-use parking area on the other side.Vault toilets are also nearby.
Closer to the water is a hiking/biking trail and a picnic table for day-use visitors.
The campground hosts were a little gruff and for the first time in any campground I was asked to pull up my reservation number. Lucky I took a screenshot of it because there's absolutely no phone or internet service up there.
The views alone made this one of our instant favorite campgrounds. It's also one of the hardest to obtain a reservation.
We spent every morning for three weeks in January to land a reservation when new dates opened up. Right at 8 a.m.. we'd' hit the button and what was available was gone. We lucked out and found a cancelation a couple of weeks before.
