I love this location, but this summer (2023) was a shock. So many trees were down, within sites. The site I always stay in was almost beyond recognition. The path to the water was impassable because a large tree completely cover it and the little beach that had always been there for water access and kayak parking was gone. The bushes that gave this site privacy from the lake were so much lower that there was no longer that privacy. Knowing the site well, it felt decimated. I know this is a LOT to take are of a wild place like this, but it did not seem as maintained as in the past. To do so would need help from beyond the location. The new hosts were sweet and helpful.

Lake and grounds beautiful as always. Host dude was unfriendly and seemed very put out just to do his job (portage and firewood). Conveniently never had change for firewood and portage. Not giving campers the opportunity to tip based on good service. This ultimately cost him at least $50, as we like to tip generously for good service, when given the choice. Time for this host to move along. Past hosts, much better and friendlier. We will keep coming to Squaw Lakes because it is awesome! However, we will pack light and avoid portage, at least until the current (summer 2022) host is gone. He’s lazy and unfriendly/borderline hostile. I wonder if he’s reporting all his cash portage and firewood “earnings” to his supervisors and/or the IRS (probably between $25-30k in 3 months). If you are thinking of camping at Squaw Lakes, do it. It’s amazing! Just pack light so you don’t have to bother the host for 20 minutes of his time for $50 (or $60 because he “doesn’t have change”).

The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The lake is beautiful! The complaints I have are that someone (Forest Service?) had fallen two large trees in the area to the lake where the kids normally swim, and where we launch our boats. Lots of debris in that area. Also, previous camper had left large empty box and garbage by the fire pit.
