Great stay as expected. we were prepared for mosquitoes, no electricity and no water inside. So our adventure with kiddoes went well. in the woods and close to lake. will stay again

We had a fantastic time at the Crocker Guard Station. Beautiful old cabin in a lovely setting. Quiet. We were there in early July - definitely bring bug spray. The kitchen had everything we needed. We brought sleeping bags, though next time I'd bring fitted sheets (twins) because the mattresses are covered with an easy-clean but somewhat slippery material.
The phone number we were given for cabin access did not work (apparently the caretakers had just quit). I ended up calling the Beckwourth Ranger Station and they provided me with the gate and house codes.

Following the instructions to get into the house was easy. As promised, this was a rustic experience with only some gas lights (not all had the little socks still in) and a working stove. We had not counted on the total absence of running water, but we made it work. The cabin is located in a wet meadow at the edge of the forest and it was just so pretty and quiet out there. Saw lots of stars. Nearby Portola offered dinner/lunch and Lake Davis and surroundings were nice for bike rides. Unfortunately were not able to swim in Lake Davis, but we hiked in the snow near Long Lake instead and that was extremely pretty.

I enjoyed my stay here (3 nights). The beds were quite comfortable. It beats sleeping on the ground any day! A real gem of a cabin. It was built on a wet meadow, so the mosquitos could be an issue if there was no breeze to keep them at bay. I plan to stay here again in the future.

Got a voicemail to call for code to cabin. Called back 5-10 times, leaving voicemails, never got code. Was not able to go to cabin. Called since for refund and no answer

Sitting in the rocking chair on the porch with a great view and watching the aspen trees quack. It was very peaceful and quiet.
The Cabin has propane and little push on lights. And the outhouse is updated and clean.
There is a dirt road that gets you to lake Davis but its not wide.
You can go to the camp ground that's a short walk and make a camp fire, but we didn't because it was windy all days we were there.
One downside was the Woodpecker that woke us up at dawn.
All in all it was a wonderful and relaxing stay.

What a relaxing place! The cabin is beautifully restored with plenty of room for a large family. There are PLENTY of kitchen utensils, pots, and pans. There is a full utility closet for clean up. The cabin is not completely fenced in, so if you have dogs that wander, you'll want to keep and eye out for them. We heard coyotes at night (pretty close), so you probably don't want to leave your smaller dogs out too long after dark. Our contacts, Laurel and Ken were very helpful when we discovered some of the mantles for the propane lamps were damaged. Ken came right out and fixed them. The cabin is set on the edge of a meadow; therefore, it is a sanctuary for nesting birds, lizards, wasps, field mice, and gophers. We saw some bear scat as well. You'll want to keep your food stored properly.
We had a great time! We strolled through the aspen groves and lava beds around the cabin and basked in the sun in the front yard. Make some time to hike up to Crocker mountain. You can drive most of the way there until the brush gets too thick. The view is breath taking! J&J's Resort Store is only 3 miles away towards Lake Davis on the dirt road in front of the cabin in case you forgot anything. The lake is beautiful, especially when viewing it from the top of Crocker Mtn.
