We had a great time at burning bear campground. We had a chuckle when the garbage truck came rolling through at 7 am tuesday morning. I guess even in the mountains the trash has to be picked up early. Quite place, restrooms were clean, beautiful views. heads up the camp sites nearest the mountain are on a little bit of a slope.

Small campground with only 13 sites, which is a nice change from some of the bigger campgrounds. The outside sites back right up to the woods and mountain (quite a great playground for kids!). The views down through the valley are great. It's a short stroll over to the Abyss trailhead and the Burning Bear trailhead with water right near the trailhead (Geneva Creek). There's only one bathroom, but it's good enough for a smaller campground. One tidbit about the sites, most of the outside sites that back to the mountain have some decent slope, which means those tent camping will have to figure out the best angle to setup their tent or have to deal with sleeping on quite a slope. We missed a bull moose stroll through the campsite the morning we arrive, but had daily visits from deer. Good spot and I'd probably stay here again.

After our reservation got cancelled at Geneva Park Campground (just a couple miles up the road) about 2 weeks shy of our scheduled trip, I was able to find a reservation for our first night here, at Burning Bear Campground. After the first night, we were able to move sites to a first come first serve site for the next 3 nights. We absolutely loved this campground! It is a beautiful, cozy, little area right off of Guanella Pass Road. GPR is a beautiful drive with a very well maintained road. We hiked Mount Bierstadt, the trailhead is about a 15 minute drive north. After the hike, we drove south to Grant and ate lunch at The Shaggy Sheep, a cute little restaurant on highway 285. We also hike Burning Bear Trail, which is just around the corner from the campground. Being from Kansas, we did experience some altitude issues the first night, but that is to be expected, I suppose. My camp stove was having problems, and I happened to find one at the little jerky shop on the corner in Grant, where the GPR junctions with the highway....I think he has about anything you are looking for if you're in desperate need of anything! Although initially disappointed about our reservations at the other campground getting cancelled, it all worked out better than expected when we took a chance on this little jewel of a campground! Clean bathrooms that smelled decent, and a great camp host, Jake, who was helpful and kind. We experienced quite a bit of rain while there, but it didn't derail the fun time we had! None of us had cell service, but we were okay with that!
