Our experience of Sylvania did not disappoint us. In spite of Covid, we were able to squeeze a 3-night trip during the Perseid meteor shower this year. Clark Lake campground was as comfortable as always. Two things you can’t control when camping—the weather and your neighbors. The weather was fantastic but the weekend tends to bring in some folks that aren’t respectful of other campers’ quiet space.
The hiking was wonderful. I have been coming up to Sylvania for over 35 years and the trails remain in wonderful condition. The waters are clear and there are great opportunities for encounters with wildlife. The real struggle here is the onslaught of invasive species and shore erosion.
I’d like to mention that there are some very dedicated folks who are nothing short of valiant in offering their service to us visitors and well as the welfare of this precious parcel of nature we call Sylvania. I’m speaking about the campground hosts. The time they spend behind-the-scenes doing hundreds of tasks that result in giving us visitors a memorable experience at Sylvania makes me feel that this place is in good hands.
Irony is often waiting around the bend in the path and Sylvania takes as well as it gives. Thirty-two years ago, I proposed to my beautiful wife at Loon Lake, with stars, meteors as well as a faint aurora reflecting on its still, inky waters. On this present trip, the morning we were preparing to leave for home, my wife discovered that her wedding band had dropped off somewhere. Perhaps someone will find it, but we’re prepared to get a new one. The sentimental value of that ring is inestimable and, in a way, I think maybe Sylvania is reminding me that promises must be kept, and our compact with soil, forest and air must be honored. In sickness and in health, but especially in sickness dare we look away from a partner who gives us beauty as well as life?

We had a great family camping trip in the Clark Lake campground. Campsites are on the smaller size, but we were able to fit our two tents after some creative finagling. Sites are wooded which means lots of shade, but also more mosquitoes. The views are nice with beautiful trees all around. There were quite a few RV's using generators at non-electric sites and that was a little noisy at times. The beach was beautiful, but we definitely needed to drive to the beach vs. walk as it is a long ways from the campsite. Plan to get the daily use parking pass if you want to use the beach. Showers were closed due to COVID (located at the beach pavilion) which was a bit of a surprise. We made do with swimming in the lake. Lots of wild raspberries that were ripe all of the campsite areas in late July. Kids had lots of fun picking berries. We didn't canoe this trip, but lots of people from the campground had canoes and were taking day trips out onto the lakes.

Sylvania is a perennial favorite of ours. However we were unaware of the detour into the park from the north entrance with noting posted on-line that we could find. Nor was any information posted on the barrier that closed off the road. This information should have been posted in a prominent way on the website and on the road into the property. We went into Sylvania Outfitters and they helped us with a map and information. This was a dreadful beginning to an anticipated and needed respite. The stay at the campground is always terrific. Sorry to see the progressive loss of beaches along Clark and Loon. The campgrounds are quite busy these covid-days as more folks seek a break from the prison walls of their homes. In the 30+ years of visiting the reserve, I've never seen so many people in the car-camping area. Almost every site had a reserved card on it. Yet, we saw almost no one on the trails and most of the activity converged at the southern end of Clark Lake via water craft. Folks were generally quiet and demonstrated good camping etiquette. We gambled on the weather, knowing that rain was in the forecast. The rain did not disappoint and nature treated us to pyrotechnic display and deluge that was the worst I've every experienced camping. One lightning strike was a simultaneous flash and boom that sent us to the car until we could work up enough courage to return to our tent. Nothing like sleeping with four lightning rods around you. We did remain dry--yeah! Of note was the activity of the mosquitoes, which in the past we found to subside by mid-August but were still quite annoying the last few years; you'll need repellent in the shady campgrounds and on the trails. In spite of the detour foul-up, the mosquitoes, heart-stopping lightning and the lingering covid malaise, Sylvania transported my wife and me to that ethereal sphere of the soul that only the North Woods can do. We'll be back for more.
