This historic campground, apparently the first the National Forest Service opened, suffers from 2 problems: One which can be fixed, and one that is impossible. The impossible one is due to the march of history: the noise generated by an interstate highway less than a football field away from the campsites. And two separate, heavily-used train tracks.
The fixable problem is not an easy or inexpensive fix. But it seems necessary. When the campground was built, undoubtedly the overwhelming majority of campers stayed in tents. RV's and trailers now make up the bulk of today's campers. But the campsites are either short, narrow or on a noticeable slope, making adjustments to have a level sleeping area difficult.
The location -- very close to the Columbia River, the Bonneville dam and a lot of history -- is excellent. But the sites need to be somehow better graded and, if possible, lengthened.

Great history as one of first campgrounds in US dating back to 1916. Unfortunately it still feels like in 1916 campground. Spaces were very small And overrun with poison oak. Campground host was not at all friendly and seldom available. You do have quick access to multiple outdoor activities in Oregon and Washington.

Nice wooded campground with sites well spaced and mostly pretty private. Steep hill with a sharp u-turn to access the campground. Near the highway anx railroad tracks, but didn't bother us. Our only complaint was that the site we reserved did not fit our 18 foot trailer despite saying online that it did and was also not accessible due to the angle required to back in on the one-way road. The camp host let us use another site we were able to back into.
