Easy to access and parking for a couple cars if needed. Bonus: It appeared the outhouse was cleaned weekly.
Access to Sequim Bay State Park was close as were many trails like Upper Dungeoness and Royal Basin, Tubal Cain Mine, Slab Camp & Gray Wolf as well as the old Ned Hill Fire Lookout remnants. While not my favorite cabin in the network you can't beat the location or price.
The heater kept us plenty warm. The use of the outhouse and our own water hauled kept us in tune with simplicity. The annoyance of a midnight outhouse run was tempered by the dazzling light show from above.
Make sure you bring enough water for cooking, cleaning (hand washing and dishes), and drinking!
Although we've stayed at Louella in December before, this was our first time with snow/ice. There were no provided shovels or other tools to remove the ice from the front steps and it was quite treacherous. We ended up sprinkling some regular table salt, and clearing a path down the stairs by scraping with a hatchet we'd brought. If you're visiting in winter you should probably bring something, at the very least some ice melt. Also, any coffee drinkers should bring some sort of French press or drip/pour over type system. The two vintage percolators onsite don't work very well, and require a very coarse grind in order for their filters to not just let the grinds pass right through. Our coffee was ground for drip, and we ended up having to retrofit a percolator with a paper coffee filter cut down to size.
The mattress on the double bed was also hard as a rock and we had a very hard time sleeping (our recollection of our last visit was a mattress that was old and with very little support, I guess this is supposed to be an improvement). That was unfortunate since one of the goals of any vacation for us is to get more sleep! The rest of the cabin was cozy and we enjoyed our stay.
in 1926.
Staying here was so much easier than camping this time of year. Toasty gas fireplace in Am. Also,Owls, full moon and stars which you viewed on your walk to the porta potty.
We loved the cabin- the stories that are written in the journals really get your imagination going- great story writing.
The fireplace was amazing after an all day hike in the clouds- we really appreciated the warmth of the fire.
We loved the quick proximity to Sequim so you can get anything you want within a very short distance.
A great place to hike- Tubal Cane- such an historic hike. We were up there for 7.5 hours. I have always wanted to hike that route but it was too far for a one day trek . Staying at the cabin allowed for a short drive to the trail head and a hike I got to experience. One more check on my bucket list!
